Unbeknownst to all, noon had arrived, and Xiao Keyan led the group of noblewomen to the hall for lunch.
The crowd noticed that Ye Yueying had been arranged to sit at the same table as Princess Chun’an, and their expressions subtly shifted once again.
The official purpose of today’s banquet was crafting flower lanterns, but everyone understood the unspoken intentions behind it.
Could it be that the Prince Residence had taken a liking to this orphan?
At the dining table, Xiao Keyan smiled at Yan Qi. "Seventh cousin, Miss Ye is a friend of mine. You should get to know each other."
After all, they were relatives. Her eldest uncle and aunt had always treated them well, and she didn’t wish for any irreconcilable conflict between her future sister-in-law and her seventh cousin.
Yan Qi looked at Ye Yueying, her expression tinged with defiance.
She knew that a marriage alliance between the Yan Family and the Prince Residence was impossible, but she couldn’t help liking her eldest cousin. If it were any of the noblewomen more outstanding than herself who caught his eye, she might accept it. But to see him favor an orphan—how could she possibly be convinced?
Ye Yueying understood Xiao Keyan’s intention to ease tensions between them. After a moment of silence, she proactively raised her glass of fruit wine. "Miss Yan Qi, regarding the incident at the Water Pavilion earlier, I regret my lack of restraint. Please accept my apology."
Upon hearing this, Xiao Keyan’s gaze flickered with amusement. She only acknowledged her lack of restraint, without the slightest hint of admitting fault—how refreshingly bold of her future sister-in-law.
Yan Qi also caught Ye Yueying’s implied tone. Initially, she had no intention of responding, but under Xiao Keyan’s smiling yet watchful eyes, she reluctantly lifted her own wine glass.
Xiao Keyan beamed. "With this drink, all misunderstandings from today will be put to rest. Now then, let’s eat quickly, ladies. There are still flower lanterns left unfinished."
After the meal, the noblewomen returned to the garden to continue crafting their lanterns.
Having spent the morning chatting with Xiao Keyan, Ye Yueying hadn’t made any progress and, in truth, didn’t know how to make flower lanterns at all. Thankfully, Wu Yutang’s younger sister was there.
"Thank you, Miss Wu!"
Ye Yueying, adept at manual tasks, managed to craft a lotus-shaped lantern with Miss Wu’s guidance before the session ended.
Miss Wu smiled and shook her head. "You’re a friend of my brother, so you’re my friend as well. Between friends, there’s no need for courtesy. Here, write your name on it. Later on, the chosen ones will get to be displayed at the Lantern Festival."
Soon, maids came to collect the lanterns.
Someone among the noblewomen asked, "Who will be judging the lanterns?"
Xiao Keyan answered with a smile, "This is my first banquet hosted in Beijing. My parents were uneasy about it and have been watching from the main courtyard. They’ll be responsible for judging. Does everyone find that satisfactory?"
The noblewomen began murmuring among themselves.
As expected, today’s banquet at the Princess Residence was indeed to examine prospects for the Little Prince and Young Duke.
Ye Yueying harbored her own suspicions, and Miss Wu’s remarks made her feel a tad embarrassed.
At this moment, Guyu spoke once more, smiling at the winning group, including Ye Yueying. "The Prince and Princess Consort wish to meet the talented young ladies behind the chosen lanterns. Please allow me to escort you to the main courtyard."
Upon hearing this, Ye Yueying’s heart began to race wildly.
"Come on, let’s go!"
Miss Wu tugged Ye Yueying along to catch up with the others, following Guyu to the main courtyard.
As the five departed, the noblewomen whose lanterns were not chosen gazed at them enviously.
The faces of the Weng Family sisters grew even longer.
Miss Weng Er whispered to Miss Weng Da, "Sister, I fear Ye Yueying might truly have caught the Prince Residence’s eye."
Suppressing her jealousy, Miss Weng Da replied in a low voice, "That would be a good thing. If Ye Yueying truly wins over the Prince Residence, it will only benefit our family without any downsides."
Still, Miss Weng Er’s heart felt stifled. "But just imagining Ye Yueying someday standing above us—that’s a thought I can’t stand!"
After the lantern judging concluded, Xiao Keyan had the maids serve tea and refreshments. Once tea was enjoyed, the noblewomen, seeing there was nothing more to do, gradually took their leave.
