After Bu Gandang left with the horses, Xiao Yeyang helped Daohua off the carriage and assisted her onto a mount, then mounted the horse himself.
The two rode together, appreciating the vast wilderness at a leisurely pace.
Daohua comfortably leaned into Xiao Yeyang’s embrace, enjoying these rare moments alone.
"Do you want to gallop?" he asked.
Daohua’s eyes lit up, and she nodded hastily.
Seeing this, Xiao Yeyang smiled heartily, swung his riding crop, and his steed shot forward like an arrow released from a bow.
Their cheerful laughter and his unrestrained radiant smile lingered over the land as their horse sped along.
Xiao Yeyang whipped the reins, and with Daohua, they rapidly raced onward. As the horse charged up a slope, a dark, grimy teenager suddenly appeared from behind it.
"Hush!"
Xiao Yeyang was startled and quickly pulled the reins tightly.
The teenager, seeing the large galloping horse, was frozen in place, paralyzed with fear.
The horse’s front hooves raised high, restrained by Xiao Yeyang’s tight grip, narrowly avoiding kicking the youth.
Xiao Yeyang steered the horse to avoid the boy and then backed up a few steps before quickly turning to look at Daohua, "You weren’t scared, were you?"
Daohua patted her chest, "I’m fine, just a bit startled."
Xiao Yeyang saw her complexion was still normal and dismounted immediately.
"I want to get off too," Daohua extended her hands.
Xiao Yeyang quickly reached out and lifted her down.
By this time, De Fu and Mei Lan, who were attending to the carriage, had also arrived.
De Fu asked, "Master, what happened?"
Xiao Yeyang ignored him and strode toward the teen, who was black as coal except where his eyes showed some white, and stood there stiffly, as if frightened silly.
Daohua also approached, not wanting Xiao Yeyang to frighten the boy further, and took the lead in asking, "Young man, are you all right?"
The boy became desperate, "They’re from the coal mine, they’re here to catch me."
Xiao Yeyang looked at the boy, "Did you escape from the coal mine?"
The teenager nodded vigorously, "Please let me go. If the people from the coal mine catch me, I’m as good as dead. I beg you."
As the voices grew closer, Xiao Yeyang glanced at De Fu, who quickly hid the teenager on the carriage.
No sooner had De Fu stowed the boy inside the carriage than several fierce-looking ruffians appeared in sight.
Xiao Yeyang stood in front of Daohua, shielding her behind him, his expressionless gaze sweeping over the ruffians.
The ruffians paused and looked at Xiao Yeyang and his companions, clearly taken aback.
Perhaps sensing that Xiao Yeyang and his group were not to be trifled with, the ruffians asked no questions and continued their pursuit.
"Why did Tiger not question those folks just now?"
"Are you blind? That horse, that carriage, they can only belong to someone of high birth, and that brocade-clad man’s aura was even more intimidating than a hundred-household officer’s. Those are not people we can afford to offend."
"What if that little brat hides in their carriage?"
