Chapter 97
Zara’s POV
The evening mist flowed around me like a river. Here in the forest off our back porch it pooled and eddied beneath the tall spruce trees. I wrapped my sweater around my body and waited. It didn’t take long.
“You’re not Ryan.” The one-eyed rogue said as he stepped onto the path.
“Disappointed?” I asked, “I know how you enjoyed your boys nights.”
The rogue huffed a laugh as he stepped closer.
“You’re bold to show your face to me after getting my men killed.” He said the words with nonchalance, but there was steel beneath them. I swallowed and kept my face neutral.
So, yes, the mission to take Avery out had failed. The rogues who had been sent to kidnap her had instead been found on the floor of the forest with their throats ripped out. I still didn’t know if they’d managed to wound Avery at all- communications with Nightwolf had stopped after my visit to Gideon’s office.
“It was unfortunate that you lost your posse,” I said carefully, “The Nightwolf Alpha is strong. He shouldn’t have been able to intervene in time, but our asset was unable to stop him.”
The one-eyed rogue crossed his arms and waited.
“My sources tell me that plans for the wedding are still proceeding. I know you want Avery, even if Ryan thinks he’ll somehow win her back. I think we both can agree that we can’t allow that to go smoothly.”
“What do you suggest?” The rogue’s body language was dangerously casual, but he smelled of blood. I was on
thin ice.
“I know that you had been kidnapping girls.” I said frankly. The rogue stiffened and I hurried on, “And I couldn’t care less, but I need one of them to sow some confusion.”
“Ah.” He caught on, “You want to create a distraction.”
“The Nightwolf Alpha has a mate, he told me so when he came here for our Mating Ball.” I explained, “But my sources in his pack say that she has never been seen by anyone else. Furthermore, that he himself doesn’t know where she is, or what she looks like.”
The rogue nodded, “And you want my assistance in making her magically appear, hm?”
It was so nice working with someone who could follow along with my plans. I swear, every time I tried to propose something to Ryan, I had to walk him through each step holding his hand.
“Exactly. We provide him a… more willing bride, and he is sure to evict Avery. Then you can snap her up and do with her whatever you please. She gets dethroned, and we have someone close to Gideon who can work for us.”
“You need me to provide the girl.”
“And I can provide a false mating mark that will stand up under scrutiny. Once our girl is inserted as Gideon’s true Luna, he will no doubt mark her for real, and there will be no further need for mimicry.”
“How will you introduce them?” He asked after thinking for a moment.

“Set up an imprisonment area and Silvermoon will ‘stumble’ upon it. We’ll call upon Nightwolf for backup and relay the intel that more girls matching the description of Gideon’s mate have been found. Then we’ll transfer the girl to his pack and…” I snapped my fingers.
The rogue shifted closer, in the dim light it was hard to tell, but I could see the patch over his eye. If it effected his physicality at all, he didn’t let it show. He was powerfully built, with an Alpha’s strength and arrogance.
Could there be Rogue Alphas? I wondered.
Without a pack, what would the point of an Alpha be? They were meant to be leaders and breeders, capable of perpetuating a bloodline with strength and vigor.
This man looked the part, despite having no pack.
My wolf instinctively responded to his virility and let me know that she would accept him as a mate should Ryan prove unsuitable.
That was interesting.
Despite spending two mating moons with Ryan, I still wasn’t pregnant. I had done everything I could, taken the right herbs, mated at the right times, and now I was starting to doubt that he had the capability at all.
If he wasn’t capable of fathering an heir on me, perhaps another option stood before me. Once I had a pup
in my belly, my future as Luna was secured. If anything happened to Ryan, I would still be the mother of his heirs.
I took a step closer to the Rogue King, nostrils flaring as I inhaled his musky sent. He smelled of burnt leaves and crushed grass, danger flowed off of him in waves. He was like no one I had met before.
I saw his white teeth flash in the darkness, “See something you like, princess?”
I caught myself, shook off the pheromones and growled.
“You overstep, rogue.” I snapped.
He just laughed.
“I’m sure your Alpha wouldn’t be too pleased to know we were meeting like this.” He leaned towards me and inhaled pointedly, “And you so soon after your mating heat too… If I were him I’d have you tucked safely in my den and fuck you until you couldn’t walk.”
I winced at his crassness, even as a flood of wetness seeped into my panties. There had been a time when I had wanted Ryan to talk to me like that, but disappointingly, after our first mating he had been frustratingly passive.
Even getting him to mate with me this past Full Moon had felt more like a chore than it should be to get him naked and interested. Once his pants were off, he was satisfactory, but it was like his mind was miles away.
I was too young and hot and breedable to lose any man’s interest.
Inside me, my wolf shook her head and flicked her ears haughtily. She wanted the interest of a strong Alpha, and Ryan wasn’t doing it. This one would do fine, even if he did smell like gunpowder and fire.
The one-eyed rogue sensed my wavering will and his smirk broadened. He reached out and grabbed my hips and pulled me against him. Unbidden, a gasp slipped past my lips.

“You… There are rules.” I whined even as my body arched towards him.
“Princess, I’m a rogue. Fuck the rules.” His breath was hot on my neck as his teeth grazed over the sensitive skin. I whimpered.
