Chapter 335
Gideon’s POV
I think I stopped breathing, but I couldn’t be entirely sure. I might have passed out for all I knew. Hell, maybe I even died during the fight, and the woman before me was an angel.
But I knew it was her.
She looked up, and the torchlight hit her face, and my wolf went wild. He just knew, all at once, the way he had always known, the way he had known from the very first moment ten years ago when we held each other in the forest on that dark night.
It was Avery.
Our mate.
Her hair was different. Shorter, darker, cut close to her jaw. She was wearing human clothes and she had aged. But it was her. It was unquestionably, absolutely her. 1
I dropped the cloth Tegan had handed me.
“Avery?”
She looked up at me. For a moment, I saw something that looked an awful lot like love cross her gaze, but she quickly slammed a hard wall of ice over it and looked away. I froze with my hand still slightly extended.
Sebastian pulled her to her feet, pulling her against his side, and said something sharp to the guards about how they were treating his guest. I barely heard it. I was still staring at her.
She didn’t look at me again,
My wolf was going wild. For the first time in a decade, his presence wasn’t hollow and full of yearning, but rather bursting with joy. Every nerve ending was firing at once. The reaction was almost violent in its intensity: I wanted to shift and wrap myself around her and never let go.
She was alive,
She was alive, and she was standing right there, and…
And she wasn’t looking at me.
Before I could speak, Sebastian guided her away. My throat tightened. I couldn’t let her get away again-

But just as I was about to follow her, Sebastian’s Beta stepped in my path with a malevolent sneer. I tried to peer over his shoulder, but Sebastian and Avery were already gone.
“The event’s over for you, I’m afraid,” the Beta said.
“Get out of my way.”
“Alpha Sebastian has asked that you and your Beta be escorted out.” He gestured behind me, and I turned to find that two of Sebastian’s guards had materialized from the shadows. They positioned between me and the rest of the house. “He thanks you for coming, but it’s time for you to leave.”
“I’m not finished here,” I growled. “My mate-”
“This isn’t up for discussion.” Colt tilted his head. “The Alpha wants you gone, so unless you want to be humiliated for a second time tonight, I’d suggest you go cleanly.”
I glared down at the hot-headed Beta for a long moment. He looked back without a hint of fear or respect, and I knew if I started something here it would be four against one in Sebastian’s house on Sebastian’s territory.
The last thing I wanted to do was leave. But couldn’t get to Avery if I was in a holding cell, so I decided to comply. For now!
