I had escaped. I had gotten away from Asher From the rogue camp. From everything.
But Gideon wasn’t here. And in the distance a storm was gathering on the horizon.
Lightning cracked, making me jump. I heard glass shattering. Wind blew cold and harsh across the field, breaking the corn stalks clean in half. Something was spinning across the field, headed straight for me. A tall tunnel of swirling wind and debris.
“Mommy!” I heard a boy shout. “Mom, get away from there! You’re gonna blow awa
Too late. I was already being swept up in the tornado. Around and around and around, my house fading below me. Then, it flung me far and fast. I saw mountains pass beneath me. Oceans.
I hurtled down. Down. Down into a dark cave. The wind battered me against the rocks. Cave paintings peeled away from the walls and swirled around me. I saw painted depictions of men holding spears with the heads of wolves impaled on them.
“Princess,” one of the paintings, a woman holding a swaddled baby, whispered. ” Your life was laid out for you before you were born… What makes you think you can run?”
I couldn’t respond with the wind howling into my mouth. The caves went deeper, deeper until they were no longer caves, but tunnels into the center of the earth. Hot and stifling, burning my skin. I saw a ball of magma ahead of me, bubbling and popping.
Suddenly, the wind stopped, and I was freefalling.
Just before I hit the lava, I woke with a start.
I gasped, pressing my hand to my chest. was still in my tent; the sun was shining,
and the air was hot and thick.
I was still getting my bearings when the tent flap opened and my guard stepped inside. He didn’t say anything. He just gestured for me to follow.
My stomach sank. “Where are we going?”,
“The Rogue King wants you,” the guard said.
I slipped on my shoes and robe and followed him out of the tent. The camp was already bustling with activity. Rogues milled about, talking and laughing. But there

was something different about the atmosphere today. An energy. An excitement.
As we walked, I heard snippets of conversation.
can’t believe it-”
“-with some slave girl, no less.”
“Looks like the Alpha couldn’t control himself…’
My blood ran cold.
The guard led me toward the cages. A crowd had gathered there. They were laughing and jeering, pointing at something I couldn’t see.
I pushed through the crowd, and when I reached the front, I froze.
Gideon wasn’t alone.
There was a woman with him. She was naked, her body sprawled across his. Gideon was naked too, holding her tight.
The scene was all too obvious.
“What…?” I couldn’t finish the sentence. My throat had closed up.
One of the rogues nearby laughed. “Looks like your Alpha couldn’t keep it in his pants. Went at it all night, from what I heard.”
Another rogue chimed in. “I bet he’s got all kinds of diseases now. That slut is known for sleeping with anyone who asks.”
My vision blurred. I stared at Gideon, watching as his eyes slowly blinked open. He jolted awake, shoving the girl off of him. The rogues laughed. Someone threw a rotten tomato at the cage. It splattered across his bare chest.
“Avery,” he breathed when he saw me.
I took a step back. Then another. The laughter echoed in my ears, I had to get away, had to hide-
“Avery!”
I didn’t wait to hear the rest. I turned and ran.
