He opened his palm, and I suppressed a gasp. It was a candy. The same kind that had fallen from Lindsey’s pocket. The candy that she’d acted incredibly strange and secretive over.
“Where did you get that?” I blurted out.
“The candies?” He glanced over at his desk, where there was a jar full of them sitting on the shelf, then shrugged. “They’re for me. I have a sweet tooth.”
I stared at the candy. That was an awful lot of candies for someone who claimed to have a sweet tooth. The jar was practically full. I wondered if he actually used them as some kind of reward. Maybe bribery. Just like he was doing with me.
I took the candy, just to please him, but already my mind was coming up with a potential test.
The next morning, I returned to the garden. Lindsey was already there, kneeling in the dirt and pulling up weeds. She looked up when I approached and smiled.
“Good morning.”
“Morning.” I knelt beside her and picked up a spade. We worked in silence for a few minutes before I decided to test my theory.
I glanced around to make sure no one else was nearby, then leaned closer to her.
“Can I tell you something?” I asked quietly.
“Of course.”
I bit my lip, then said, “I’m not really pregnant.”
Lindsey’s eyes widened. “What?”
“I lied to Asher about being pregnant.” I kept my voice low, watching her face carefully. “I just wanted to see if he would let me keep the baby. But there is no baby. I made it up.”
Lindsey stared at me for a long moment. Then, she swallowed hard and looked down at the dirt. “Oh. I… I see.”
“You won’t tell anyone, will you?” I asked, tilting my head.
“No. Of course not.” She shook her head quickly. Too quickly. “Your secret is safe with me.”
“Thank you.” I smiled and turned back to the garden.

A few minutes later, Lindsey stood and brushed the dirt from her skirt. “I need to go get more water,” she said. “I’ll be right back”
“Take your time.”
She hurried away, her chains clinking with every step. I watched her go, and wondered if she would come back with another treat in her pocket.

Chapter 286
Gideon’s POV
I sat in the waiting room while Deirdre was being examined, tapping my foot against the linoleum floor. My wolf was pacing inside my skull, restless and angry. Every second I spent here was a second wasted.
Avery was still out there, alone, potentially trapped with the Rogue King and desperate for help.
But instead of going to her, I was sitting in the doctor’s office, playing into Deirdre’s games. All because I needed to catch her in her lie.
But at least, once she was exposed, I could move forward without her slowing me down.
The exam room door opened, and the doctor stepped out. He glanced at me, then gestured for me to follow him inside.
Deirdre was sitting on the examination table with her legs dangling over the edge. She looked nervous at first, but smiled faintly when she saw me.
“Well?” I asked.

The doctor picked up his clipboard and studied it for a moment. “Miss Deirdre is perfectly healthy. No internal damage. No signs of trauma or abuse. She’s in excellent condition, actually.”
I looked at Deirdre. Her face had gone pale.
“That’s… That’s not possible,” she stammered. “I was in so much pain earlier. I felt like something was wrong.”
“Sometimes stress can manifest as physical symptoms,” the doctor said. He set aside his clipboard and smiled. “But there’s nothing medically wrong with you. You’re as healthy as a wolf!”
Deirdre’s mouth opened and closed a few times. Then, she looked at me and forced a smile. “It must be because I’m by your side low, Gideon. Your love healed me.
My love healed her. Right…
