The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 278

Chapter 278

“I see… Well, my name is Lindsey. Or… It was. All the slaves go by numbers instead. I’m sixty-four.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Lindsey.” She seemed a little better, so I helped her stand, gripping her arms to steady her. I decided to take my chance then.

Glancing over my shoulder, I saw that my guard was preoccupied with a goat that had escaped and was currently head-butting his shins with its horns. I leaned close to Lindsey and whispered, “Is it true that an Alpha was here last night? Alpha Gideon?”

Lindsey froze. “I’m not sure if I’m supposed to talk to you about that.”

“I won’t tell.” I tried not to let the fact that her response already indicated that he had, indeed, possibly been here. “I’m just curious if he really came and took Deirdre away.”

She swallowed, searching my face. I willed my expression into a serene and welcoming smile.

Finally, she said quietly, “It’s true. He came to camp late last night and talked to the Rogue King. Next thing I knew, Deirdre was leaving with him. He carried her right out. They kissed.”

My heart sank. I still didn’t want to believe it, but out of the mouth of a slave who had no true loyalty to Asher changed things. Why would she lie to me about something like that?

So Gideon had come to camp. If he’d spoken to Asher, then he must have known that I was a captive. And he had still taken Deirdre instead, leaving me behind in the process.

My mating mark seemed to burn with the realization, but I pushed the feelings down. I knew Gideon didn’t love me. Despite everything, he would still choose Deirdre over me. He’d marked me only because he wanted an heir and a mate, not because he loved me.

Now, my decision to run away to the human lands was set in stone. As soon as I got out of here, I would get my mother and leave and never look back.

I decided to send her a letter. It was risky, but if I worded it carefully, it might work.

“Mother,” the letter read, “I’m in the Rogue King’s camp. If you can find it, you should come. Remember what we talked about before? -A”

It was simple, but it would be sufficient. She would understand. She would find me. And then we could leave together.

I finished writing the letter and sealed it, then gave it to the guard. “Can you mail this for me?” I asked.

He looked at the envelope. “The Rogue King oversees all incoming and outgoing mail. If you want to send something, you’ll have to give it to him.”

Of course. I curled my fingers around the envelope, wondering if I should bother sending it at all. Maybe it was a stupid idea, and it would be better to burn it.

Asher suddenly appeared from around the corner and snatched the envelope away before I could react.

“What’s this about mail?” He asked. He tore the envelope open and unfolded the letter. My jaw tightened, but I held my ground as he read it, even though I felt like I was going to be sick. I feared his wrath.

To my surprise, though, he didn’t get angry. He just looked up at me with a faint, almost gentle smile.

“You miss your mother that badly?” he asked.

“I… was hoping to see her,” I said. “To thank her for… adopting me all those years ago.”

Asher nodded and slipped the letter into his pocket. “I’ll send for her,” he said. ” She’ll be brought here to live with you.”
