The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 227

Chapter 227

I couldn’t transform before because I was too weak. Now that I felt her true strength flow through me, and even that just a fraction of what still lurked within her, I understood. There had been something inside of me, something that I had carried since I was an infant, that had been suppressing my power.

The wolf didn’t know what exactly it was, but it had prevented my transformation long past the time most wolves would have shifted. It wasn’t until recently that my own strength had grown powerful enough to start to override the block.

‘But what could have caused such a thing?’

‘I don’t know,’ my wolf said, and in the words was all her pent up sorrow and anger at having been separated from each other for so long, ‘perhaps ask your mother?’

‘I will,’ I promised, ‘but in a little while. I want to enjoy this.’

Being in wolf form was unlike anything I had dreamed of. My senses of hearing and smell were so much sharper, and even the way she processed what she saw was different. Movement was heightened, while colors were muted.

We paused at a small pond, where she lowered her head to drink from the water.

She was beautiful. Her coat shifted from silver to gold around the points of her body, and her eyes were great pale moons in her regal face.

Finally, after what felt like hours running in the woods, rejoicing at being united at last, we arrived b the border of the woods and the pack house. I felt a last surge of love from my wolf before she retrea back into my mind, and the strange shifting transformation restored me to my human form. 1

It was hard to suppress my sense of elation as I dashed up the stairs to my mother’s room. Finally accomplishing the thing I had tried so hard to do for years, and succeeding, was an adrenaline high like no other.

However, finally shifting had left me with more questions. I burst into my mother’s room.

“Mother!” I threw myself into the chair by her bedside, and clasped her hands in my own, “Do you know if I was given anything when I was a child? Some… potion perhaps? Something that could have been blocking my ability to shift for so long?”

My mother looked startled, perhaps by my question, or because of my sudden exuberance.

“Did you…” her eyes darted around my face, “talk to Gideon?”

“What? No!” I said, annoyed that she was changing the subject, “Please mother, this is important. Something given to me that could have suppressed my wolf until now?”

But it was like she had gone away inside. She just kept shaking her head and telling me that she didn’t know. Then that she was tired.

“Go talk to Gideon, daughter. No more questions about the past. He is your future now…”

Annoyed, I rose from her bedside, not willing to jeopardize her health further. Instead, I stalked across the pack estate, looking for my husband. I found him eating his dinner in the private dining room and he looked so pleased to see me that for a moment, I forgot my irritation.

“Avery, please,” he gestured for me to sit.

Perhaps it was the newness of my wolf-form still pumping power through me, but this was the first time I felt like I was approaching him like an equal, powerful in my own right. I didn’t sit right away, but stood there, assessing him.

His face was open, honest, but I had been fooled before.

“Did you mean what you said?” I asked, as he rose to face me instead, “That you would be a devoted husband to me from this point forward?”

A look of longing passed over his face, “I swear it. Avery, what’s wrong? Please sit down.”

He moved towards me, his hand brushing along my arm, but I turned away and threw myself into the chair to avoid his advances. Warily, he sat back down across from me.

“Did you doubt me? I meant every word,” he said, with a fervor that made my heart pang.

I stared into those stormy eyes, feeling mistrust warring with my desire to indulge in this new intimacy that had sprung up between us. I couldn’t help but wonder at how Gideon’s motives might have char now that he knew more about my alleged bloodline. 1
