The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 215

Chapter 215

Avery’s POV

“Does anyone have anything they wish to confess?”

Gideon said the words in a low voice, the way one might discuss the weather, or a favorite sports team, but the intent behind them carried all the weight of a masked man carrying a baseball bat.

The effect on the table was immediate. Everyone went stock still, as though continuing to move would be to confess guilt. We all looked at each other, trying to figure out who Gideon was talking to, and what he already knew that we did not.

As possibly the only person at the table who had already confessed their dark secrets to Gideon recently, I was the only one who continued sipping my lemonade while my eyes shifted pointedly towards Dierdra.

If there was ever a guiltier wolf, I had yet to meet her, but although Dierdra turned slightly pale, she did a passable imitation of innocence, and I admit, I was a little impressed.

Gideon scared the shit out of me, and I hadn’t even done anything to warrant his wrath. How much more terrifying it must be for someone like Dierdra who was actively colluding with the enemy and pretending

to be the dutiful mate and mother?

Interestingly enough, Gideon’s family did not exactly look as though their consciences were clear either? There was rather a lot of throat clearing and nervous shuffling happening from his parents and sister as

well.

Perhaps they particularly disliked being reminded of who was in charge?

Still, no one spoke up. No dark confessions spilled out on the table.

As though this was what he expected, Gideon gave a mirthless smile and said, “This is your one chance at mercy,” to no one in particular, though his eyes roved around the table as he spoke, “If I find out that anyone has lied to me, and has not chosen to confess, then know this…”

“I will destroy you.”

He said the words with that same smile that didn’t meet his eyes. I knew I should feel a thrill of fear, and I did feel a tingle in my spine as his eyes landed on me, but the heat that bloomed within me at his glance was anything but fear.

Why did my body have to respond in this way, NOW?

I blushed and stared down at the table, remembering how he had almost kissed me in the garden.

What would happen, I wondered, if I confessed that instead? I stifled a giggle thinking about Dierdra’s

reaction.

Probably not a great idea, but there were other ways a girl could have fun.

So instead of confessing that her mate had been on the verge of cheating with his wife, I spent the majority of the next thirty minutes trying to push Dierdra over the edge.

I had my suspicions that her pregnancy was not real. It would be hard to prove, however, and so I wanted to do some subtle probing first.

“My mother mentioned that when she was pregnant with me, she was ultra-sensitive to the smell of fish,” I said, offhandedly, as I watched Dierdra pick up a tuna sandwich.

“Oh yes,” Gideon’s mother seemed happy to have a change of subject, “When I was pregnant with… Gideon’s brother,” she stumbled over the mention of her son who had been exiled, but rallied, “I couldn’t even be in the same building as the kitchens. There were too many smells that would set me off, and I made sure to never be too far from the wash room in case.”

“It’s so nice that you don’t seem to be having any such side effects?” I gave Dierdra a too-wide smile, and inwardly laughed as she slowly put down her food with a grimace.

“Are you sleeping well, dear?” Camila asked courteously. Now that we were on the topic, it seemed like the others had some questions as well.
