Chapter 213
Avery’s POV

Catching Dierdra coming back from what was clearly some sort of escapade was like Christmas come early. She had a dodgy, distracted look about her when she got out of the pack vehicle in the parking lot, and she had jumped when I had cornered her on the path.
Now she tried to gesture at her baby bump as a method of getting me to back off. However, even her own attempts to appeal to my higher nature were hindered by the doubt on her face.
It was like she didn’t even believe it herself.
For the first time I took a long hard look at her body, at the swelling of her stomach under her dress. Was it possible that she was faking her pregnancy? Or at least… over-emphasizing it?
It made me sick. I held the strong opinion that pups and their mothers should be protected and given comfort, but I also could never use a child of my own as a bargaining chip or a shield. It was our job to protect the defenseless, not hide behind them.
Dierdra’s repeated efforts to use her pregnancy as a deterrent was disgusting.
“Listen here, bitch,” she whined at me, “You don’t know who you are messing with…”
“Neither do you,” I said, getting in her face, “Just how long do you think you can keep up this charade? There will come a time, soon, when all your lies are going to be revealed.”
She scoffed at my warning, but I saw a hint of real fear in her eyes. I doubted it was because of my words, so it must be something else. Or someone else.
Had her meeting not gone well?
“Yeah, well, you have plenty of secrets yourself!” Dierdra spat back, “You act so high and mighty, but you’re just as bad as I am.”
I just blinked at her.
“I have only ever tried to behave as a good Luna,” I said matter-of-factly, “I have made mistakes, but I learned from them. Whatever bad things have happened to you, they were a result of your own choices. You know that, right?”
Dierdra didn’t like this response, and her stained lips lifted away from her teeth in a snarl, showing her sharp canines. She was going half feral. Whatever had gotten under her skin must have really shaken
her.
Rarely had I seen her this distractible and susceptible to criticism,
“You haven’t even tried to be a good Luna!” I continued, pointing my finger at her chest, “No wonder the pack has been complaining! All you do is take, you never give back.”

“And why shouldn’t I?” Dierdra snarled back, “No one’s ever given me anything for free! If I have learned to look out for myself, it’s only because I had to!”
She flexed her fingers at her sides, looking as though she wanted to try and slice at my face.
A part of me hoped she would try. I would have loved the opportunity to try and put her down in her place.
“Your attitude towards pack law is dangerous,” I growled, “and you must know that Gideon will not let it go much farther.”
Dierdra blinked as though my words were projectiles bouncing off of her head. This time when she growled a response, her wolf shone behind her eyes, a flash of yellow. Was she really that close to losing control? Or was she just trying to bait me into attacking her first so that she could get Gideon to punish me again?
Unfortunately for Dierdra, my wolf saw hers as a threat, and I felt her move to the forefront of my mind, staring out of my eyes in return. When I spoke again, it was my wolf’s power that rolled through my voice, a pure note of dominance.
“STOP LYING,” I/my wolf commanded, and Dierdra’s eyes dropped to the ground immediately. It was an automatic and instinctual submissive act, and both of us appeared surprised when it happened. Dierdra’s lips parted in a gasp and a second later her eyes flicked back up to mine in shock.
We stared at each other in a long, silent clash of wills. Each of our wolves battling for dominance, our internal strength in direct opposition.
