All eyes swiveled towards that high bench where the leaders of the Alpha Council sat motionless. They appeared just as taken aback by the events unfolding on the council floor as anyone else, though their faces were more schooled to implacability.

“What of the Luna?” One of the Council members called out, “Do you call for her removal as well?”

All heads swiveled back towards Reynaud once more, and I was among them. If the motion carried, what Reynaud said next could be the difference in life and death for me. Would he honor our agreement and allow me to regain my position as Luna after Gideon was removed?

“In my mind, she is as bad as he is,” Reynaud sneered, those cold eyes meeting mine with a mocking gleam, “There isn’t a single loyal bone in Luna Avery’s body. She practically threw herself at me during the Alpha Ball, and were I a weaker man, I might have succumbed to her charms,” Reynaud’s smirk was lecherous as he looked me over openly, “I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that she’s thrown herself into the arms and bed of many Alpha’s here.”

Outrage boiled within me, as Reynaud delivered this condemnation. So all his pretty words were just more lies, I realized. He had manipulated me, and I felt all the more foolish that I’d ever viewed him with the slightest trace of admiration. 1

“She’s nothing but an unfaithful slut,” Reynaud drawled, “She should be punished in the same way.”

Gideon seemed to increase in size as Reynaud spoke. I could see the tendons in his neck and shoulders flexing. Every muscle in his body seemed taut.

“He’s going to lose control!” someone screamed, and there was a hurried movement backwards as the crowd all swiveled to look at Gideon where he stood holding me.

“Gideon?” I whispered, feeling their terror splash against me, “What are you doing?”

I thought I knew this man, and I had counted on being safe around him, but as the seconds ticked by, the nervous tension in my own body increased. Gideon wouldn’t hurt me… would he??

I twisted my head to try and look in Gideon’s face. His eyes were bright yellow, shining with the threat of

violence.

“Council, I recommend that this man be removed, and if he will not relinquish the girl, then perhaps she

can at least be used as bait to lure this feral wolf away!” Reynaud sensed now was the time to move in for the kill, “And if the Council sees fit to fill the hole caused by his absence, I volunteer to step into his

place!”

The audience burst into an uproar at this, realizing that Reynaud was making a play for Gideon’s power and prestige,

“And what does Gideon Nightwolf have to say for himself?” A council member called out.

At this question, all heads rotated back to the powerful Alpha who had been straining at my back.
