The Heartless Alpha’s Beloved Luna (Avery and Gideon) novel Chapter 160

Chapter 160

Gideon’s POV

The delegation from the village found us mere minutes after the Rogue attack, and never had I felt more relieved to see our string of warriors dashing across the field towards where the abandoned cars idled

on the side of the road.

Normally this many rogues would be challenging, but we would be assured success. My wolf alone could handle the majority of them.

But this time I was handicapped.

Dierdra clung to me, shaking like a leaf, her eyes wide and panicked. It was obvious that she was reliving the worst parts of her capture and torture at the hands of the rogues before I had rescued her.

For a moment I saw Avery barrelling out of the car behind us, her face worried and anxious as she

looked for me.

“Help!” she cried out, and I almost ran to her, but Dierdra’s fingers clutching into my arm reminded me of where my duty lay.

“Don’t leave me!” my mate gasped, pulling me back to her. I growled, hoping she could find comfort in the sound, but it only seemed to make her more agitated.

I wanted to shift, to tear out rogue throats and lap at their heart’s blood, but I was tethered to Dierdra and could not leave her side. I wrapped my arms around her protectively instead, sheltering her, although in my mind my wolf paced and howled, begging to be released. 1)

A minute of chaos passed, while the attacks from the rogues on our small party seemed light but constant. There was no opportunity to shift focus or move to engage the larger amount of the force that flooded across the roadway and darted in and out of the woods on either side. 1

Suddenly, I heard Avery scream. A bloodcurdling howl that stopped me in my tracks. Where was she? 1

I turned to dash in the direction of her screams, but again Dierdra held me back.

“Gideon!” She sobbed, “She’s already gone. It’s too late.”

Stunned, I stared into the dark woods, but I couldn’t see anything. Was Avery out there? Was it really too

late to save her?

As reinforcements from the village reached us, I directed Tegan to take a group and look for her. A few minutes later they returned, faces grave.

“Alpha,” Tegan said somberly, then paused.

“What is it? Where’s the Luna?”

“She’s alive, Alpha, but barely. The healers are transporting her now. It appeared the rogues were trying

to drag her away but dropped her when we arrived and fled.”

Shards of ice speared into my heart. Avery…

Slowly we climbed back into the cars and resumed our drive to the village. As the cars wound down the drive I saw the healers with stretchers carrying Avery towards the pack house.

“You haven’t asked if I’m alright,” Dierdra complained in the seat next to me. I tore my attention away from the window and looked her over quickly.
