Chapter 153
As the day moved along, the approaches became more predatory. Men sat around me at dinner, and did not speak to me, only stared at me openly while they chewed their food. They ogled my body, sniffed the air in the wake of my passing, and I found myself watching the exits and scanning passageways before I walked down them, trying to avoid finding myself caught in a bad situation.
Now, as I entered the ballroom during the second night of dancing, the unattached Alphas thronged in my vicinity like sharks circling their prey. There was blood in the water, and they all smelled it.
I was without a protector among these dangerous, predatory males, and they all knew it.
“Dance with me,” one grabbed my arm, and when I tried to pull myself away, his fingernails scratched along my wrist, scratching red lines in my skin while he smirked at my struggles.
Another’s eyes flashed yellow with his wolf as he bullied his body into me, bumping me with his chest towards the dance floor.
“What’s the matter?” the Alpha snarled, “I just want to dance.”
I stammered and flinched away as the man’s arousal became more obvious the more I protested. He grabbed my hand and placed it on the front of his trousers, and I could feel the intense heat pouring off
of him as he tried to force me to touch him.
“No, thank you!” I cried out. My eyes scanned the crowd around us, looking for a single sympathetic face that would come to my rescue, but the women just turned away, ignoring me, and the men’s interest was
even worse.
I was only entertainment, like watching a cheetah run down an antelope. They hungered for the chase, and identified more with my tormentors than with my plight.
“Please!” I raised my voice in the ballroom, and more wolves turned towards me, but it was the instinct of predators when they sense the weak and the wounded. The crowd pressed towards me, but not to help, only to observe.
One man elbowed his way to the front, and at first relief flowed through me at his arrival.
“Reynaud! Oh thank goodness, please take me away from here!” I called out to him, stretching out a hand.
“Oh I’ll take you, Luna,” Reynaud grinned, and the white flash of his teeth made the hair on my neck stand on end, “come back to my room and I’ll show you exactly what you missed out on last night…”
I stared at him in horror. This was a totally different man than the nice Alpha who had brought me punch the night before. He was made bold by the chance that I no longer had Gideon to look out for me.
I made a noise in my throat and turned to flee. If I could just get away from this throng, perhaps I could barricade myself in my room and last until the caravans left to head back to Nightwolf territory the next day?
There was no escape, the group of Alphas around me was closing in. They didn’t grab for me, but neither

did they give me a path out. They were waiting, waiting for a predator to arrive and take me.
And then he was there.
I saw their eyes dart away from me, tracking the approach of a contender.
