I couldn’t wait to see what my Beta had discovered. If Avery had truly fled, then there was one place I had to look first. Just the thought of her fleeing there ignited rage in my heart.
If she had run back to him…
My fingers twitched, wanting to tear something apart.
I stalked out the door and towards the cars as I shrugged into my jacket.
Trees whipped by in the darkness on the drive to Silvermoon. My emotions flipped from hot to cold with each mile that ticked by on the odometer. Incendiary fury if I found her where I had told her not to go. Wintry terror that something terrible might have happened to her.
Avery was so young and naive. She truly did not understand how good she had it in Nightwolf as my Luna. The world was a cruel and unfair place, and it would be all too easy for her to end up in a bad situation if she left.
I just hoped she would be smart enough to realize that before it was too late.
I ground the sedan to a halt in front of the Silvermoon pack building. It was late in the night, but I saw figures running across the grass.
Relief and wrath bubbled within me.
There was Avery, pursued by that chump Alpha, Ryan. It was time to put an end to that.
I stepped out of the car.
Avery froze as she spied me. Ryan was a bit slower to notice my presence, but his gaze snapped up as he felt my approach.
“I’ll be taking that which is mine.” I growled, “Interfere and I’ll take your life along with it, as promised.”
“She doesn’t want to be with you.” Ryan called out. Avery whirled on him with a hiss but he continued as I approached, “We will keep her safe here until she makes her decision.”
“You will not.” I intoned. “Silvermoon can’t protect itself, much less a Luna who is being hunted by rogues.” I locked my gaze on him, knowing that he couldn’t stand up to me for long.
Ryan sputtered incoherently as I wrapped my fingers around Avery’s arm. She fought against me briefly, but I squeezed my fingers and growled and she subsided.
Ryan’s eyes gleamed with anger. He took a step forward, and I matched him readily.
“Punching your stupid face will be the best wedding present I’ve received today,” I warned with a sadistic smile, “Well, second best.” I would never truly forget the image of Avery standing in my bedroom in that dress and stockings…

Ryan’s eyes gleamed yellow. He was so close to shifting, his wolf was prompting him to do something very stupid. Last time I had seen him, had told him if he talked to Avery again I would kill him and take Silvermoon for myself.
Now I wondered if tonight would be the night he tested that promise.
Beside me, Avery ignored us both, staring at the ground as though she had given up. That was all the permission I needed. I hauled her towards the car, eyes still locked on Ryan and daring him to fight me.
Hatred washed across his face as he watched me Ipad Avery into the car, but he didn’t move. Wise choice.
The drive back to Silvermoon, Avery stared out the window silently. I wanted to shake her, to ask her what the hell she was thinking. At one point I thought I saw her wipe a tear from her eye, but when I turned my head, she had turned her face even further away and I wasn’t sure.
Was she crying about leaving that loser, again?
I really didn’t understand her.
