Rachel stared at Peter, hiding a cold sneer behind her eyes.
Honestly, her feelings for Peter were complicated. She loved him. She hated him. Rachel had always been a hopeless romantic, but her family barely scraped by. When Jon, a wealthy businessman, came into her life, she married him even though her heart was never really in it. It was a practical choice. Life as Jon’s wife meant comfort and luxury, things she’d only ever dreamed of.
Jon adored her and gave into her every whim, but somehow, it was never enough. Then Peter showed up, home from college. Back then, being a college student was rare, and Peter was the kind of dreamy intellectual Rachel had always imagined falling for. The first time she saw him, she was hooked. It wasn’t long before she fell head over heels.
But Peter never loved her back. To him, Rachel was just a convenient housekeeper. He only married her because Jessa liked her, hoping to give his daughter the perfect stepmom.
Rachel knew all about Peter’s obsession with another woman. He had only ever loved one person and devoted his whole life to protecting that woman’s daughter. Rachel had always been painfully aware of this.
Jealousy ate away at her. Years ago, she came up with a bold plan. She switched Ella and Jessa.
Now, as she stared at Peter, Rachel’s secret laugh grew colder. She’d pulled it off. She’d gotten her revenge on everyone. If Peter ever found out he’d spent years protecting the wrong girl, his reaction would be priceless.
On top of that, she’d managed to make her own daughter the heiress to the richest man in the world. That thought made Rachel feel pretty smug.
But now, it seemed karma was catching up to her. Jessa didn’t even acknowledge her as a mother anymore.
Peter’s voice broke through her thoughts. “Why are you so quiet?”
He gave Rachel a skeptical look, his gaze sweeping over her. “Rachel, you’re acting weird. Is there something you’re not telling me?”
Her heart stuttered. “No, you’re just imagining things.”
Peter frowned. “You’d better hope I am. Don’t try anything, Rachel. Mr. Wade is here to take Jessa back to the Capital. Don’t make things complicated.”
Rachel kept her face calm, even as she scoffed inside. “I know, Peter. I haven’t done anything. Let’s just go back to our room. Mr. Wade gave Jessa a credit card today, and I promised I’d take her shopping tomorrow.”
