Ella couldn’t believe what she was hearing. Right then, her new car rolled up to the curb. She glanced at the group. “Sorry, I was just waiting for my ride. I don’t have time to stand around and chat, I’ve got to go.”

“Waiting for a ride? You mean a taxi?” Jessa smirked. “Ella, you know it’s almost impossible to get a taxi outside the hospital.”

To be fair, Ella usually did take taxis. Jessa’s assumption made sense.

Maureen gave Ella a long, critical look. “Honestly, Ella, I can’t respect you. Just look at your classmates. Every single one of them has their own house and car. They’re all doing great, but you’re still relying on taxis. You really put the whole ‘genius girl’ thing to shame.”

Rachel tugged at Maureen’s sleeve. “Come on, Maureen, that’s enough. Don’t say that. Ella’s situation is actually kind of sad.”

Ella ignored them, her attention on her new car. The driver stepped out and walked over to her.

She moved past Maureen and Rachel, stopping right in front of Jessa. She gave her a playful wink. “You know what, Jessa, you’re absolutely right. Getting a ride here is impossible.”

Jessa looked all too pleased with herself.

Ella turned to David, who was sitting in the back of a Rolls-Royce. “Mr. Harmon, maybe you could give me a lift?”

Jessa’s expression changed instantly. “No way!”

Ella raised her eyebrows at Jessa. “Why did you bother butting in at all then?”

Jessa looked like she was about to explode.

David studied Ella quietly. It had been two days since he’d last seen her, and they hadn’t spoken since. Today, her long, dark hair was loose and shining, framing her delicate face in a way that made her impossible to ignore.

He started to say something. “It really is tough to get a ride here. You—”
