Ella glanced at David.

He was still holding Jessa’s hand, looking down, but then he slowly raised his head and met Ella’s gaze.

For a moment, their eyes locked.

Before David could say anything, Ella looked away. She shot Jessa a quick look and managed a small smile. “I’m just glad you’re okay. I’ll get going.”

She turned and walked out.

But she didn’t leave right away. Ella lingered just outside the door, listening to the voices inside.

Jessa’s tone was thick with hurt. “David, tell me the truth. Did you sleep with Ella?”

David’s eyes darted to the door, then back to Jessa’s pale, anxious face. “Jessa, I’m sorry.”

He didn’t even try to deny it.

Jessa’s lips trembled. “Why, David? You told me it was over with her. You promised.”

David’s stare was heavy, troubled. He had said those words, but he hadn’t been able to stay away. He couldn’t help himself. He had gone to Ella.

Jessa’s voice grew cold. “You broke your promise. I told you not to touch her, not to sleep with her. Now that it’s happened, I’m giving you one last chance. I’ll forgive you, but you have to pick. Me or her. I want you to divorce Ella. Right now.”

Ella heard it all through the door. Jessa was making him choose again.

Would he really pick her?

Or would it always be Jessa?

Jessa wanted him to end it, right now.

Ella’s eyelashes fluttered as she looked down, her head bowed. She stood there for a second, then turned and walked away, her slim shadow trailing behind her in the hallway light.
