David just stood there, stunned.
Ella fainted from what?
The morning-after pill?
He wanted to ask, but before he could say a word, two quick beeps sounded and Lilly had already hung up.
Jessa heard everything. She stared at David, eyes wide. “David, are you serious? Ella fainted from taking the morning-after pill?”
David didn’t answer. He gently pushed Jessa out of his arms. “I need to go.”
He left in a rush, not looking back.
Jessa turned to Rachel, confused and worried. “Mom, do you have any idea what’s going on? David and Ella haven’t even slept together. Why would she take that pill?”
Rachel’s face was tight with concern. “I’m not sure. But I’ll get to the bottom of this, Jessa.”

David drove to Central College as fast as he could. He found the campus clinic and went straight in.
“Mr. Harmon, you’re finally here. Come on, look at Ella!” Lilly called, grabbing his arm and pulling him toward the bed.
David looked down at Ella. She was curled up, looking so small and fragile, like she might break if anyone touched her.
Right then, her eyelashes fluttered and she started to wake up.
“Ella, you’re awake,” Lilly said, helping her sit up.
Ella glanced over and saw David standing there. Her eyes widened in surprise. “Why are you here?”
David stood tall, his expression impossible to read. “Lilly called me.”
Ella still couldn’t quite believe it. She’d just had an allergic reaction to the pill, and Lilly had actually called David.
She looked over at her friend. “Lilly, you shouldn’t have…”
