Ella was about to reply to the message, but her phone started buzzing. Someone was calling her. She glanced at the screen, and her heart jumped.
It was David.
He was actually calling her. Why now? Wasn’t he supposed to be with Jessa?
Ella couldn’t guess what he wanted, so she let the call ring out. The phone kept vibrating, again and again, until finally it went silent.
She lay back on her bed, but even though it was late, sleep just wouldn’t come. She tossed and turned, staring up at the ceiling. Then, out of nowhere, there was a knock at the door.
Who would come by at this hour?
The knock came again, sharp and steady, echoing through the quiet.
Ella pushed herself up and went to answer. Standing outside was David.
The hospital hallway was dim and silent, his tall frame half hidden in the shadows. He looked like he had just come in from the cold night air, his shoulders still holding onto a chill. His dark eyes locked onto hers, intense and unreadable.
Seeing him there, so suddenly in the middle of the night, sent her heart racing.
What was he doing here?
He looked down at her. “Why didn’t you answer my calls?” His voice was deep, a little rough around the edges, and it sent a shiver through her.
“I didn’t hear it,” she said, pretending not to care.
