David was pissed. She told him this was the last time, that he shouldn’t come looking for her anymore. It stung more than he wanted to admit.

But Ella just shifted, her small hands sliding from his shoulders to wrap tight around his neck. “David, don’t push me away.”

Her wide, watery eyes fixed on his, and her voice came out sweet and drawn out, almost like a pout. It hit him right in the gut, making every muscle in his body tense up.

“It’s just like before. Our little secret. I won’t tell Jessa,” she whispered.

Then she kissed him again.

David and Ella broke apart fast. Ella’s cheeks were burning as she slid back into her seat, suddenly remembering they were still in the car.

David hit the gas and the car shot forward, eating up the road in seconds.

Neither of them said a word. David drove one-handed, his wristwatch glinting as his other hand rested by his side.

Then a small, soft hand reached over. Her pinky brushed against his fingers, just a feather-light touch.

It sent a strange, gentle warmth straight to his heart.
