Chapter 1416: Long Winded Speeches

Leaving before the meal probably would have been the better idea, Karl realized. It had been an entire hour of tearful goodbyes, and then another hour of polite goodbyes from the King’s Advisors and Ministers, all of whom were anxious to thank Karl for the hard work he had put into getting Rue ready for her role.

After a night of careful consideration, they had all come to the same conclusion. Rue really was one of the best options for Queen.

She was smart, quick to adapt, fast-growing. And, she listened to the King without arguing, and without trying to assert dominance over him or overrule his decisions. A Queen who actually stood at his side and supported him would make the King’s life so much easier, and Rue had a bit of a hero complex for her older brother.

When it came to matters of state, she might have her own ideas, but she wasn’t the sort of person who would throw a tantrum in public or undermine him to get her way.

Many past Royals suffered through political marriages where they had to "handle" their partners, and ended up constantly stressed. Putting Rue in that position, where all the other women who came later would be beneath her and not hold the status to be in the room for the most important meetings, would be a huge relief for everyone, not just the King.

By now, they were all aware of the basics of what had happened with the Queen’s faction last night. But the fallout hadn’t been decided yet, only the fact that many were likely to see their careers end, as the King had lost faith in them.

However, Karl would not be around to see what the final determination was. Misty was beginning to look impatient as he said his farewells, and prepared to open a portal so they could leave.

"Wait, let me do it. If you do it, who knows where we will end up." Misty complained.

Karl shrugged. He didn’t have the power to move through time, and he was reasonably sure he could aim well enough to hit the right planet, even if things had changed. He did use landmarks as his targeting method, not buildings.

Misty opened the portal into what looked like a young girl’s bedroom, and ushered Karl through first, followed by Cara, before coming herself.

If she didn’t go last, who knew what might try to sneak through.

"Where is this? It doesn’t smell like you." Cara noted as Misty closed the portal behind them.

"It’s a spare room in the Palace. Well, at the moment, anyhow. Now, we need to move along, but first you need directions. Cara, you’re in your natural form for this one. Karl, you’re going as yourself. I mean, as the Cat Demon version of you. You can do the new one if you like. Anyone who knows you will know that they’re the same person.

This mission will be a shorter one.

All that you need to do is to go collect a set of System Stones for safekeeping, and then we’re on to the next mission." She explained.

"And why am I stealing System Stones?" Karl asked.

"For safekeeping, of course. If you don’t take them, then the wrong people will find them and destroy them before they’re needed again. Don’t stress about it, we’re going to put them right back when we’re done."
