Presley watched Chloe, who was standing tall, brimming with confidence, and couldn't help but find it amusing.
"So you're saying you're good at everything, huh? Well... well... how about chess then?"
Chloe glanced at the chessboard he pointed to and frankly admitted, "Nope!"
Presley's eyes sparkled, his mood visibly lifted. Ever since his two grandsons learned to play chess, he enthusiastically participated in competitions but always ended up losing. It had been a while since he last savored the feeling of victory. Today, he'd relish in the joy of victory once again!
He chuckled, then looked at Chloe seriously.
"You said you can do anything well, right? Alright, then play chess! Here's your chance! If you can beat me in one game, I'll approve your engagement, but if you can't, stay away from my grandson! I won't take my words back lightly!"
Chloe pursed her lips tightly, giving Presley a stern look for a few seconds before settling down across from him.
"Deal!"
Nathan's legs almost gave way, and he nearly fainted. If his brother knew she had hastily gambled their future on a chess game, he'd be furious!
Damon had just gone to the bathroom, how did this happen in the blink of an eye?!
He saw how riled up she seemed by Presley!
"Keep in mind, if you fail, you'll regret it for the rest of your life! You mustn't bet your future with my brother on this! You need to realize, you're playing into grandfather's hands. If you lose, the consequences will be dire, have you considered how my brother would feel?!"
Nathan was utterly devastated, his voice choked with emotion. However, Chloe seemed indifferent, "I just realized I was provoked, is it too late to regret?"
Nathan gasped, "It's..."
"Too late, but I want to propose one condition!"
Presley snorted, "Greedy."
"This game is inherently unfair. No matter how hard I try, I can't compete with your years of chess prowess. Even if I won a game, it'd mostly be down to luck. I don't think it's too much to ask for a condition!"
Chess prowess! Winning a game would be luck? That felt good to hear!
"Alright, I'll grant you a condition!" Presley agreed readily.
Chloe nodded, "Simple, you must personally attend my engagement party with Damon."
"Deal!"
She was right, luck didn't come easy. Even if she had ten more conditions, she couldn't always count on luck!
"Alright, let's begin!"
Nathan felt a sudden jolt of anxiety.
Then, Damon came out. He was on the phone, saying, "Yeah, it's true...whether you're coming back or not is up to you, but you can't bully her."
He hung up and turned to look over. Then, he saw Nathan anxiously hovering around Presley and Chloe.
"Grandpa, you can't give her a tough time when my brother isn't here!"
"She...she bet with grandpa, three games of chess, if she loses all, your...your engagement...is off..."
Damon's face turned dark instantly. He turned his gaze to Chloe, his icy stare piercing through her even without looking up.
Presley glanced at Damon, smirking sarcastically, causing Damon's face to darken further.
Chloe braced herself and looked up at Damon, giving his hand a reassuring squeeze.
"Don't worry, trust me, I can win one game."
Seeing the confidence and compromise in her eyes, Damon didn't show much change in his expression, his dark eyes still held a melancholic look as he stared at her.
"Hurry up. Let’s begin." Presley urged impatiently.
Chloe let go of Damon's hand, focusing on the chessboard again.
...
The weather was beautiful in autumn, warm sunlight pouring down.
But in the corner of the Harper family's main estate, there was an eerie chill in the air, filled with a sense of impending doom.
Damon's face was, without a doubt, the darkest and most terrifying it had ever been. His expression was more frightening than a grim reaper.
Nathan sat next to the old man, cold sweat trickling down his forehead, his facial muscles twitching uncontrollably!
