He figured she'd never have to dig out her old identity papers again. Something must've come up to make her break that promise.
Paxton didn’t press for details. He just said, “Go on. We old folks here will keep everything under control.”
Nellie was quiet for a bit before nodding, “Thanks.”
“It’s been tough on you all these years,” Paxton sighed. If it weren't for her role as the leader, she wouldn’t have ended up like this.
Nellie turned away, keeping her emotions in check, and said, “I’ll head off now.”
“Alright.”
Paxton nodded, watching her leave until she vanished from sight, then slowly brought his gaze back.
Meanwhile, Mirabella noticed Nellie hadn’t replied, so she put her phone away. She turned her attention to Cassie, who was sprawled out on the bed, saying nothing for a moment.
Cassie, feeling uneasy under her gaze, asked cautiously, “Why are you looking at me like that?”
Mirabella arched an eyebrow and lowered her legs. “No reason.”
“I don’t buy it,” Cassie muttered, feeling like his sister was brewing some grand scheme.
Mirabella brushed off his suspicion and changed the subject, “What’s going on with school?”
“Those assignments are a breeze. I talked it over with Mr. Hammond, and I’ll just study at home and go straight to the finals,” Cassie shrugged.
With finals about a month and a half away, Mirabella nodded, “Sounds good.”
Cassie, suddenly feeling a sense of doom, thought, “...”
Nick, after wrapping up his chat with Mirabella, called his old assistant overseas.
He told him to get the study materials ready ASAP. After giving instructions, he dived back into work, needing to look up some documents, and then went with colleagues to the advanced research library.
Since last year’s document theft incident at the medical school, he was cleared of suspicion. With his recent contributions to the lab's research, his researcher status got a little bump up.
Before, he could only access the regular library, but now he had the green light for the advanced research library.
This was his seventh trip to the advanced library today, and thanks to last year’s incident, the door now needed multiple verifications to open.
Security was tight. There were even 360-degree surveillance cameras inside the library.
