Lucie froze, her heart tightening so much that the cookie in her mouth suddenly tasted bitter.
“Mum, I really miss Aunt Shannon. Please? Can you talk to Dad and ask her to come back?” Cody tugged at her arm, putting on a sweet face that was way too sly for a kid his age.
“Cody, do you really want Shannon to be your mum?”
Cody’s eyes darted around. “Uh… can’t I have two mums?”
Lucie’s heart skipped a beat.
Technically, he did have two mums.
Maybe that’s why he felt such a strong connection to Shannon. He even looked a bit like her, especially around the eyes. But his build and attitude was all Steven—tall, broad, and already a little harsh.
He was like a little wolf pup.
“Can I? You can be my main mum, and Aunt Shannon can be my second mum.”
Lucie shivered and shoved him away, a little harder than she meant to. “Go away! Just get out!”
Cody stumbled back, his face screwing up in anger. “You’re so mean! What was that for?”
Lucie’s heart sank. She couldn’t even look at him. “Just leave! I’m not your mum anymore. You’re not my son. Go call Aunt Shannon your mum if you want!”
Cody stuck his hands on his hips, pouting. “Fine! I don’t want you as my mum anyway. If Dad didn’t tell me to come cheer you up, I wouldn’t have bothered. So there!” He stuck out his tongue, pulling a face at her.
