Seeing Leopold exit the diner, she seized the chance to respond.
[Sorry, Arno, mom's been grounding me from my phone lately. Couldn't respond to your messages. I'm doing okay now, no need to worry.]
Arnold responded quickly. [Glad to hear you're alright. I'm still in Starhaven, wrapping up a few shoots. I should be back in a couple of weeks.]
[I'll wait for you.]
[Promise me you'll tell me if something's bothering you or if you're unhappy. Don't keep it to yourself.]
[OK.]
...
Aurelia looked up to find herself under a massive shadow. Startled, she turned to find Leopold standing behind her, his eyes dark and cold as he stared at her phone. His face was as dark as a storm cloud.
She shivered. "I...I thought you went out?"
When did he come back?
Leopold ground out between clenched teeth, "You were hoping I'd leave?"
"No," she recoiled. "I'm going to check on the kid." As she stood up to leave, he swept her into his arms and strode out of the diner, heading upstairs.
Her face went pale from fright. "Put me down!"
Aurelia felt as though she'd been stabbed in the back. She shrank back, her self-esteem crushed under his words.
"I know you despise me, so I thought it'd be considerate to ask for a divorce, to get out of your sight." She lowered her gaze. She was terrified of his anger, his temper. But no matter how she acted, it seemed he was never satisfied, never happy. Being disliked felt like being a mistake. As if even breathing was wrong.
Leopold's eyebrows knitted together, his chest rising and falling heavily as if a storm was brewing inside. "I do despise you. I despise you a lot!" He said icily. He despised her double-faced nature, how she entangled with Arnold, how she could easily affect his mood and make him lose control... But what he despised the most was how she kept bringing up divorce!
Aurelia flinched as if she'd been hit, a tear trickling down her cheek.
Even though she knew how he felt, hearing it from him always hurt twice as much, making her feel as if a knife had pierced her heart. "Then let's get the divorce as soon as possible!"
He gritted his teeth, clenching them so tightly that it took a long moment for him to force out the words, "Fine, I'll grant your wish! All you need to do is one thing, and you can get your divorce!"
