The whole ward was eerily quiet.
After the nurse led Brittany to William's room, she pushed open the door saying, "You can only stay for a half-hour. Go in."
Brittany thanked her, took a deep breath, mustered up all her courage, and pushed open the door.
The door opened.
William was half-lying on the bed, holding a book, flipping through it leisurely.
He was wearing a large hospital gown, which made him look even weaker.
His face was pale, his lips tightly closed, his eyes deep but missing the gentleness of the past.
Brittany's gaze traveled from top to bottom, landing on the flat bed.
She had heard from the doctor both of his legs had been amputated.
Her eyes reddened instantly, and her courage collapsed in an instant.
"Bri, why are you here?"
William heard footsteps and thought his parents were coming, but he didn't expect it was Brittany.
He tried to sit up, closing the book in his hand, saying, "Why have you lost so much weight? Haven't you been eating well?"
Hearing his words, Brittany felt a heartache, and tears involuntarily streamed down.
She walked very slowly. Each step felt like stepping on a knife's edge, and the pain was almost unbearable.
It took her several minutes to walk to the side of the bed.
"William, I'm sorry."
Brittany started to speak, tears streaming down her face. She tried to control her emotions but found it impossible.
She couldn't face William at this moment, nor could she face herself, who had caused him to be this way.
William saw Brittany crying and felt a bit flustered. He reached for the tissues on the bedside table, wiping away her tears. "Don't cry. I'm okay, just need some time to adjust."
But Brittany cried even harder.
William tried to comfort her but to no avail. He finally gave up, waiting for her to finish crying, then gently said. "I'm the one who lost the limbs, not you. Stop crying."
Brittany's eyes were already swollen red.
"Including marrying him?"
Timothy sneered.
He was not short of wealth or connections. What could Brittany offer in exchange?
Brittany clenched her fists. "Mr. Dillion, I can do anything but that."
She respected, admired, and was grateful to William, but she didn't love him.
She wanted to repay him in countless ways, except for marrying him.
Timothy gave another cold laugh, not saying anything more.
By the time Brittany left the hospital, it was late, and heavy snow had begun. In just a few minutes, she was covered in a layer of snow.
Snowflakes fell on her collar, melting instantly. The chilly air seeped into her clothes, causing Brittany to shiver.
She had only walked a few steps when a bright red sports car pulled up. Sydney Ramsey got out of the car with a furious look on her face, and slapped Brittany across her face.
"Brittany, why aren't you dead yet!"
