Grace was worried about hitting Brittany's sore spot, so she subtly changed the subject. Brittany appreciated her consideration and nodded with a smile.
After breakfast, Brittany made a trip to the Dustin Group. In just a few months, the once booming Dustin Group had hit rock bottom. The talent had fled, and the atmosphere was one of total defeat.
"Miss Brittany, is that you?" The receptionist was pretty shocked to see Brittany show up.
Back when Brittany was with the Dustin Group, she was a real powerhouse, and everyone in the company knew it. Then she got kicked out of the Dustin family, and Patrina took over. The Dustin Group was toast after that.
The receptionist rushed over, relieved to see Brittany looking even better than before. She asked, "Miss Dustin, are you here to take over the Dustin Group?"
If that was the case, there might be hope for the company.
But Brittany wasn't here to take over the Dustin Group. She was here to see Robert.
"Where's Robert?" Brittany asked.
"In his office." The receptionist sighed, her respect for him long gone, replaced by impatience.
"What happened?" Brittany was observant and noticed her change in demeanor.
"Miss Dustin, I'm okay. I just haven't been paid in three months. Everyone who could leave has left. I can't, because I've got a contract. If I leave, I'll have to pay a penalty three times my salary." The receptionist said.
The Dustin Group was in ruins, and anybody who could bail had already done so. She'd just bought a house and couldn't afford to pay the penalty. How could she possibly leave?
Brittany felt a pang of sadness. She knew the Dustin Group was going through a rough patch. But Robert had a lot of savings. How could he not have money to pay salaries?
The receptionist said gloomily, "Miss Dustin, the security guards have resigned. Nobody will stop you."
Brittany turned around and saw a disheveled Robert crawling out from under the desk. He was wearing a wrinkled shirt, his face covered in stubble, gray hair on his head, and bloodshot eyes. He looked extremely haggard and distressed.
"Bri, what are you doing here?" Robert asked.
Seeing her, Robert quickly straightened up and forced a smile, "Bri, you're worried about your dad, so you came to see me. Right?"
Brittany put down her bag and looked at Robert, "I've been to see Gianna."
"That evil woman?" Robert quickly moved forward, trying to grab Brittany's hand, but she stepped back.
His hand stopped mid-air, and he chuckled awkwardly, "Bri, dad was fooled by her too. I'm to blame. Can you forgive me?"
"I've always been curious. If you had doubts about my parentage, why didn't you ever get a paternity test?" Brittany asked.
