When Cassie came out of the bathroom, Aaron was still asleep and Isabel was stroking Snowflake’s fur.

“We’ll be back around three in the afternoon.” Cassie announced, stuffing a romper for Lily into her satchel. The clothes she had worn to the hospital were bloodied and she was currently wearing a hospital gown so a change of clothes were in order. “There are leftovers for you and Aaron. Please make sure that he at least does a little bit of his homework before he starts to watch movies.”

She grabbed her satchel and headed out of the house. On a train on the way to the pediatric center, she had begun texting Amanda to find out what the doctors were saying about Lily’s condition when a call came in. It was a number she didn’t recognize but she picked up anyway.

“Hey Cassie. It’s Daniel from work.” Daniel said. “I got your number from Annalisa. I hope that’s okay.”

“Oh yeah.” Cassie assured. “It’s perfectly fine.” The last time someone from work had called her personal number, it had been Annalisa who was calling to inform her that Bethany wanted her to come to work. She hoped that Daniel wasn’t calling with bad news.

“I wanted to talk to you yesterday but Annalisa said that she saw you leave the office in a hurry.” There was an awkward pause on his end. “I hope you’re okay. She said that you looked really upset.”

Cassie almost snorted. Saying that she ‘looked really upset’ was possibly the greatest understatement of the century. She knew that she looked a complete mess the previous day, mascara stained tears streaking down her face made her the poster picture of panic and gloom. “My little sister hurt herself in a playground accident and the school took her to the hospital. The doctors kept her overnight so they could know if there were any changes in her condition. A family friend stayed with her at the hospital throughout the night, so I’m on my way to see her now.”

Daniel exclaimed. “I hope she’s doing okay.”

“Judging from the texts I got, she’s doing just fine. Last night, she basically guilt tripped the doctors into moving her to a different ward so that she could watch cartoons with the other kids.”

Daniel chuckled lightly. “That’s good to know. So I’m guessing that you’re going to be late to work today?”

“I’m not coming in today.” Cassie said. “Mr. Callahan gave me the day off.” It still sounded strange to her. Felix wasn’t exactly the face of understanding and niceness but he had asked her to take as much time as she needed off work until Lily was okay.

“Well, enjoy your day off.” Daniel said. “I was calling to give you feedback on what you asked for the last time we spoke.”

“Oh?”

“About Isabel’s cousin’s legal issue.” He clarified. “My brother finally got back to me. Sorry that it took so long. He’s more of a corporate lawyer so he had to call his colleagues that were immigration lawyers.” He explained.

She breathed a sigh of relief. “Thank you so much, Daniel. And thank your brother too. You have no idea how much this means to Isabel and I.”

“And Isabel’s cousin.” Daniel added.

Cassie let out a jovial chuckle. “And Isabel’s cousin. Okay bye. And thanks for your help once again.”

“You’re welcome.”

She hung up just as the train pulled to a stop. The journey from the train station to the hospital took a couple of minutes but even still, Cassie’s injured leg aches by the time she gets to Lily's room.

Lily’s room was sterile and smelt antiseptic just like regular hospital rooms but unlike regular hospital rooms, it was decorated with children in mind. The room was a bright shade of pink and had wallpapers with jungle animals. It was filled with cards, flower bouquets and fruit baskets that were sent from well-wishers. There were a couple of hospital machines in the room but their surfaces were covered with cartoon stickers. The bedspread was mostly white but bore tiny sunflowers on it. A line of multicolored paper bunting decorated the window.
