Belinda opened her mouth to say something, but Lance cut her off.
“Suspend Catherine’s duties. I’ll handle the investigation myself. No exceptions.”
He finally looked away from Catherine and shot Belinda a pointed glance. “She works for me. What happens to her is my call, not yours.”
Ever since Lance took over the company eight years ago, SilverLeaf Industries had only gone up. He kept breaking records, lifting the business higher and higher. Even if you ignored his title as the James family heir, the board still treated him with real caution.
Even now, with what seemed like clear evidence, nobody dared to challenge his decision to keep digging.
What Lance did just now? It was a slap in the face for Belinda. And honestly, it stung a lot more than the one she’d given Catherine earlier.
Without another word, Lance left the conference room. Aaron hurried after him, and Josh gathered the rest of the group to follow.
Belinda forced a smile for the board members, her jaw tight. “Sorry you had to see that. Lance is always thorough. Let him investigate. I’m sure he’ll give all of you, and The Green Family, a proper explanation.”
The board, smart enough not to get caught between mother and son, exchanged a few polite words and left.
The second the door closed, Belinda’s anger boiled over. She marched straight to Catherine.
“Catherine, don’t blame me for this! Who told you to keep getting between Adelina and Lance? I warned you, don’t even think about joining the James family!”
Catherine’s eyes stayed cold and distant. “Don’t worry. The James family’s door... I’m not walking through it.”
Her voice was steady, her face set with determination.
Belinda froze for a second. She hadn’t expected that.
“If you’d just offered me two million to end my contract today, I would’ve smiled at you, even after two slaps. But you chose the wrong way. I’m not leaving like this.”
