The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 597

A faint, knowing smile traced Lance’s lips, his gaze growing heavy and unreadable. “If you’ve got something to say, Ingram, spit it out.”

Ingram’s grin widened as he nudged the teacup closer. “Your private life isn’t really my business—I’m just making conversation, no intention of meddling. The massages here are first-rate, by the way. You should try one later. But for now, let’s talk about that government project.”

Lance’s gaze lingered on his tea before he quietly picked up the cup and took a measured sip. Seeing this, Ingram’s smile grew even broader.

“That project was originally in the Lee family’s pocket. Isn’t it a little… impolite for us to barge in at the last minute like this?” Ingram said. Geoffrey, eager to please Lance, had sounded him out in advance—he’d wanted a joint venture between their firms. At the time, Lance had shut it down. But then, he’d done an about-face, barged in, and handed the whole thing to Ivan.

Geoffrey had hounded Ingram multiple times after that, demanding to know whether he was muscling in on his territory. That’s when it dawned on Ingram: Lance was stirring the pot, sowing discord between them. If Ingram pulled out now, Ivan would take the fall for incompetence—and Lance would lose his right-hand man. But if he stayed the course, they’d move against the Lee family, which would all but kill their chances of taking control of the Eldervale branch.

“If you feel it’s inappropriate, Ingram, you can always call things off,” Lance replied, settling back into his chair with practiced nonchalance, leaving Ingram no room to maneuver.

With nothing solid on Lance, Ingram switched tactics. “You know the old saying—sometimes the student surpasses the master. I watched you grow up. Never thought you’d have even more drive than your father.”

Lance absently ran his thumb along the rim of his teacup, and under Ingram’s intense gaze, brought it to his lips and sipped again. The cup was half-empty now, and Ingram was quick to refill it.

“Alright,” Ingram acquiesced, raising his own tea for a toast. “It’s your generation’s world, now. I’ll step back. But do me a favor—look after Isaac. Help show him the ropes, yeah?”

He clinked cups with Lance, matching him sip for sip. Lance waited for Ingram to drink first before finishing his own tea.
