As she talked, Catherine picked up her bag and walked toward the elevator. When she passed Lance, she nodded politely to let him know she was leaving.
Luckily, Lance stayed where he was.
She lowered her voice, ready to give Gavin a proper answer. “But I can handle my own problems. You—”
The call cut off. All she heard was the dial tone.
Only then did she realize Gavin had already hung up on her.
The elevator doors opened and she hurried inside, not giving that sudden call another thought.
Inside the huge executive office, Lance stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking out over the commercial district of Cabinda. The SilverLeaf Industries building glowed in the night, its lights bright enough to light up half the sky.
Lance’s face was impossible to read. He leaned on the window frame, cigarette burning between his fingers. Smoke curled around him, blurring the sharp lines of his face.
He kept lighting one cigarette after another, but no matter how much nicotine he took in, it did nothing to calm the restless feeling building inside him.

When Catherine got home, she called Lorinda on video and asked her to buy more medicine for her morning sickness.
“The doctor already told you, you can’t keep taking that stuff. Medicine always has side effects, and this isn’t a real solution,” Lorinda tried to talk her out of it. “Are you seriously not going to reach out to Gavin?”
Catherine’s resolve wavered for the first time.
“Lorinda, what if Jasper’s dad suddenly showed up one day and tried to take him from you? What would you do?”
Lorinda didn’t even hesitate. “My kid means everything to me. I’d fight to the end for custody. No question.”
Now that things were spinning out of control, Catherine’s mind kept running through all the worst scenarios. What if she really couldn’t leave? What if people found out she was pregnant, and who the father was? How could she possibly win against Lance if it came to a fight for her child?
And if she lost—what then?
Lorinda didn’t sugarcoat it. “Jasper’s dad was just a donor, so he always knew there might be a kid out there. But you’re different. You hid your pregnancy from Lance and you’re planning to have the baby. If Lance finds out… well, forget about custody for a second. Do you think the James family would ever let you go? What about the Green family? How do you think Lance will treat you then?”
