Catherine couldn’t make sense of it either. She let out a sigh and stayed quiet.

“You know, you probably should’ve just gone with Gavin when he tried to recruit you,” Lorinda said, thinking it through. “Golden Horizon Enterprises is still in Cabinda, but honestly, anything’s better than being around Lance. In five months your bump will be impossible to hide. If Lance finds out then, you’ll have no way out.”

Catherine had never even considered taking that kind of risk. Having the baby right under Lance’s nose? No way. Trying to lie about who the father was and hoping no one would figure it out was just way too dangerous.

“I’ll try to come up with something else,” she said.

“Wait, I’ve got an idea,” Lorinda said, suddenly inspired. “Why don’t you reach out to Gavin? See if he’d pay your penalty fee. If he’s willing, you could leave for Golden Horizon Enterprises.”

Catherine shook her head before Lorinda even finished talking.

“Gavin would probably pay the two million just to get back at Lance. But if I join Golden Horizon with my reputation, they’ll never trust me with anything important. Plus, everyone will see me as a traitor to SilverLeaf. I may never be able to hold my head high in this industry again.”

“And you know what my situation is like right now. Hiding this and joining a new company is basically lying. If Golden Horizon finds out, it won’t just be about paying a penalty fee anymore. It’ll be a much bigger mess.”

Hiding a pregnancy while starting a new job was against company policy. Catherine felt completely stuck.

Lorinda groaned. “This is impossible. You never should’ve joined SilverLeaf in the first place. Meeting Lance just ruined everything for you. With your background, you could’ve easily married a great guy and had a happy life.”

“I need to get back to work. Let’s talk tonight,” Catherine said, trying not to sound too defeated.
