Gavin reached out for a handshake, then suddenly remembered something and wiped his hand twice on his pajama pants.
“Don’t worry, I’ve got you covered from now on!”
Catherine hadn’t planned to join Gavin’s company. She felt like she’d just been pushed into it.
For her, it was a total surprise.
For Gavin, it was the best kind of accident.
“You just relax and enjoy your maternity leave. I’ll handle things with my family,” Gavin promised. He didn’t want to wait until the Main Family came knocking on Catherine’s door with trouble. He wanted to explain everything to them now, before things got messy.
“Alright. I’ll call you when dinner’s ready.”
“Sounds good. And don’t bother going out to buy groceries. I’ll have them delivered. I’m your boss now. No way I’m just going to eat for free at your place.”
Gavin was grinning so hard it looked like his smile might split his face. “Go wait inside!”
He spun around and dashed off toward his own place before Catherine could even say anything.
She could only shake her head, then hurry back inside and stop Alexa from heading out for groceries.
Less than an hour later, a mountain of hotpot ingredients showed up at their door. There was way more than any of them had expected.
Right around then, the news broke. Catherine had left SilverLeaf Industries and joined Golden Horizon Enterprises.
People outside the industry just thought Catherine was amazing. Who else gets hired away by a big competitor and pampered by them, all while she’s on maternity leave? She must be seriously talented.
But people who really knew the business saw the real story. Odds were, the baby Catherine was carrying belonged to Gavin.
SilverLeaf Industries had just lost a star employee, and now they were facing a wave of gossip and speculation.
“So did you ever wonder if you were adopted?” she shot back, poking at Gavin.
“No way. All my unreliability comes straight from my mom,” Gavin laughed. “If Jasper turns out to be a troublemaker, that’ll be your fault for sure.”
Lorinda rolled her eyes. “Who knows? Maybe Jasper’s dad is even worse than me.”
“Wait, who is his dad?” Gavin suddenly remembered. “How did you even have this kid?”
“IVF,” Lorinda said, patting Jasper’s head. “I picked his donor super carefully. His dad graduated from a top medical school, he’s six feet tall, smart, and good-looking.”
“That’s where you fell short compared to Catherine.” Gavin flashed Catherine a thumbs-up. “A real high-quality man in the flesh is the real deal. Who knows what’s up with those donors? For all you know, the guy could have a criminal record, be violent, a total creep…”
Lorinda fished out a piece of steaming tofu and stuffed it right into Gavin’s mouth. “Enough out of you!”
Gavin let out a yelp, fanning his mouth as the hot tofu burned his tongue.
