“Okay.”
Catherine felt a twinge of guilt, but she knew she had to do what was best for everyone.
She turned and slipped out of the banquet hall.
In the crowd, the tall man who always seemed to stand out glanced over, his eyes landing on her smooth, slender back. He recognized her right away. She was here with Gavin.
A shadow passed over Lance’s face. The people chatting with him felt an instant chill and went quiet, cutting themselves off mid-sentence. A few followed his gaze, but all they saw was Gavin.
Everyone knew Lance and Gavin didn’t get along, but seeing Lance’s mood sour just from spotting Gavin was something else. They never imagined the tension ran so deep.
“Excuse me.” Lance set his wine glass down and walked to the window.
The banquet hall was on the third floor, open in the middle so you could see the lobby below. After leaving the hall, Catherine took the elevator down and sat on a sofa in the lobby. Through the glass, her figure was clearly visible.
Lance couldn’t help but watch her.
The sharp sound of heels echoed behind him and then stopped. He pulled his gaze away and turned.
“Lance, I’ve never seen anyone act the way you do.” Sally stood there, frustration written all over her face. “You made Adelina leave and now you’re not even going after her? You’re about to marry her. How can you treat her like this?”
Lance’s look was cold. “Looks like you have a lot of spare time. Do you always stick your nose into other people’s business?”
“Adelina’s my friend. I just think she deserves better.” Sally stepped closer, ready to argue. She wanted to tell him about those two years abroad with Adelina, about how all Adelina ever talked about was Lance. She’d even seen notebooks full of his name.
