This place was way more affordable than the spot Amanda picked.
They grabbed a table by the window, ordered a few small plates, and while they waited for the food, their conversation drifted back to what happened earlier.
“Amanda still hasn’t said who’s running the orphanage,” Lorinda said, suddenly remembering something. She pulled out her phone. “I’ll ask Patty.”
They’d gotten Patty a phone before she left for boarding school. When she was at school, her phone stayed with a teacher, but on weekends and holidays, she could use it whenever she wanted. Today was the weekend, so Patty should have been home.
“That kid’s different from the others,” Lorinda said, staring at her phone. “Nobody’s even stopping her, but she isn’t glued to her screen. I bet she put it on silent to study. It’s been ages and she still hasn’t replied.”
She waited a while, but there was still no word from Patty.
“Why don’t you just call her?” Catherine suggested.
Lorinda dialed, but got the automatic message that the phone was off.
“What happened? Did her battery die?” Lorinda tried again, but got the same message.
“Try later,” Catherine said. “Kids always use their phones until they’re dead and only remember to charge them afterward.”
Just then, a commotion at the entrance caught their attention. Catherine automatically glanced over, forgetting what she was about to say.
A woman in a long black dress walked in, pearls draped elegantly around her neck. She had that effortless grace that made everyone else fade into the background. In a place like this, she looked completely out of place.
“Well, would you look at that,” Lorinda murmured, just loud enough for Catherine to hear. “That bag’s got to be at least six figures. She could buy this whole restaurant. Who’s this rich lady slumming it in Eldervale?”
As she said it, the woman glanced their way, her gaze sharp and lingering, before she sat down at a table nearby.
Right away, a waiter hurried over to serve her, and the manager followed close behind, clearly realizing she was someone important.
“Let’s eat,” Catherine said as the food arrived. She tore open a set of chopsticks and handed them to Lorinda. “Better hurry, we need to get back to Jasper. He won’t sleep unless he sees you.”
