The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 43

Catherine’s version of events was just her side of the story. Adelina had no proof, and that realization snapped her back to reality.

“I knew it. Why would Lance ever keep Catherine around? That woman is way too calculating. I almost went to Lance to start something over this, and we would have ended up fighting again.”

Belinda tried to calm her down. “Adelina, just focus on you and Lance. Let me handle Catherine. Don’t start another argument with him, you know what he’s like when he’s upset…”

Lance had already gone above and beyond, leaving work just to chase after Adelina and make her smile in front of everyone. That was the limit of his patience. Adelina understood that, which was why after their last fight over a text, she had been the one to apologize first.

Catherine’s car crawled along. She watched in her rearview mirror as Adelina pulled out her phone to make a call. Only then did Catherine finally step on the gas.

It was one in the morning by the time Catherine finished her shower and climbed into bed, her phone still in her hand.

Lorinda was on a video call. The moment she saw Catherine’s tired face, she let out a dramatic sigh. “Even if you weren’t coming out of that whole marriage mess with Lance, you should still quit. This job is too much for anyone, let alone someone expecting.”

Catherine had been dealing with morning sickness from the start, the worst of it held back by medication. She wasn’t throwing up anymore, but her appetite was gone. She could barely eat, and now, at just nine weeks, she’d lost almost ten pounds.

“I’ll be careful,” Catherine said quietly.

Lorinda flopped on her bed, arms spread out. “My Harrisburg trip, summer by the ocean, Nanning… will we ever go? If your resignation doesn’t go through, I swear I’m going to lose it.”

Catherine pressed her lips together. “It should be soon.”

She could tell that, as close as Adelina and Lance seemed, Adelina couldn’t really get through to him on her own. She would have to ask Belinda for help.

And once Belinda got involved, Catherine knew it would only be a matter of time before she was out.

Belinda moved faster than Catherine expected.

The next morning, Catherine got a call from Belinda, asking her to meet at eight in the coffee shop downstairs at SilverLeaf Industries.

Catherine showed up ten minutes early. She waited almost half an hour before Belinda finally arrived.
