Adela caught the whole conversation too. “Catherine quit? So she’s out and can’t help anymore?”
Geoffrey’s face was tight as he handed his phone back to her. “Honestly, her quitting might be for the best. Without someone backing her up, she’ll be easier for us to deal with. As for Lance… I’ll handle him.” He glanced at the plastic bag in Adela’s hand. “Take care of that as soon as you can.”
“Okay.”
They went their separate ways at the restaurant entrance.

“What did you just say?”
It was evening in Harrell’s office at Eldervale Hospital. He stopped halfway through taking off his white coat and stared at Lance. “Who told you Catherine’s baby is Gavin’s?”
Lance sat in Harrell’s chair, his eyes dark. “Nobody told me.”
Harrell hesitated, almost saying more. Catherine had gotten pregnant just six months after her divorce. That kind of timing made it look like she’d been seeing someone else before her marriage ended. He’d made up that story, hoping to light a fire under Lance and get him to figure out who the real father was. But things hadn’t gone as planned.
“There’s got to be some mistake. Gavin isn’t the type to keep things under wraps. If he was really with Catherine, he’d go head-to-head with the Main Family and take her home. He wouldn’t keep it secret.”
Lance knew Gavin well enough to agree. It made sense. But he’d seen what he’d seen.
“Any luck with Lorinda?” Lance asked, meaning Harrell’s attempt to get information out of her.
Harrell shook his head. “Lorinda’s really careful. I used to barely talk to her, and now that I chat with her a bit every day, she’s already getting suspicious. I could tell you exactly when she got pregnant, though, if you want to check it out for yourself.”
“Lance, why don’t you just force me to tell you what you want to know?” Harrell’s hands tightened on his knees.
Lance’s eyes narrowed. “If you ever hurt me, I know it would be because you had no other choice.” They were brothers, after all. Lance wouldn’t push him too hard. Besides, he had a pretty good idea what was being used to keep Harrell in line.
“I hope one day you’ll still remember what we’ve been through together,” Harrell said quietly. “Daniel’s not someone you can shake off easily. And with your mom so close to the Green family, you’re going to need real proof about Adelina if you want to stay in control. But Lance, have you thought about what happens if you push Adelina too hard? She hates Catherine right now. If you corner her, she could do something desperate. Catherine could get hurt.”
Lance shot him a look. “You don’t have to remind me.” He stood up, grabbed his car keys, and headed out.
Harrell grabbed his coat and followed him home for a drink. They didn’t talk much, just sat across from each other, clinking their glasses and drinking in silence. As usual, Harrell was the first to pass out, same as always.
“Lance, my brother… Whatever trouble I caused, I’ll take responsibility. I’d never throw away more than twenty years of friendship,” Harrell slurred, his head resting on the table.
