“Catherine, what’s with all this news online?” Lorinda didn’t waste a second. As soon as she saw the headlines, she called. “Is that guy seriously stupid?”
The articles didn’t mention Sebastian by name, but Catherine knew it had to be him. Nobody else would pull something like this.
Online, everyone seemed to have an opinion. The loudest rumors were all about her being single and pregnant, with no clear idea who the father was. People were already speculating she was just looking for someone to take responsibility.
“I’m outside Lance’s place right now. I wanted to see him and figure out what to do next, but the news broke before I even got a chance to talk to him.” Catherine stood by the curb, nudging a pebble back and forth with her foot.
“So if Adelina’s behind this, do you really think Lance is going to help?” Lorinda asked.
“He has to think about the company, doesn’t he?” Catherine said, clinging to that tiny bit of hope.
Lorinda didn’t hold back. “Why do they care if you have a baby? Don’t they have anything better to do than mess with other people’s lives?”
She remembered all too well when she had Jasper. The comments section was brutal. People said they didn’t know who Jasper’s father was. Some even accused her of buying her own baby, claiming she hadn’t even given birth herself.
But Lorinda had never cared. The internet was her job. Haters were still viewers, and the extra attention only made her more popular.
Catherine was different. A scandal like this could ruin her reputation, and with it, her whole future.
“I have to go. I need to see Lance,” Catherine said.
She hung up and walked toward the house.
On the second-floor balcony, white curtains fluttered in the breeze. Lance was there, watching her from above, his dark eyes locked on her figure by the road. He was on the phone, listening.
“You’re not going to suppress the story?” Aaron sounded surprised. “If this keeps up, the company’s stock is going to take a hit.”
Lance didn’t sound worried. “It’s fine. There’s no rush.”
Aaron hesitated, then asked, “Should we look into it more?”
“Find a way to get Adelina back to Cabinda, then go to the Lee family for an explanation,” Lance said.
Aaron understood right away. This had Adelina and Sally written all over it.
