His phone rang right at that moment. He let it buzz all the way until it was about to go to voicemail before finally swiping to pick up.
"Lance, I’ve found some clues about Catherine’s pregnancy. She actually…"
"Don’t bother," Lance interrupted, cutting Aaron off.
Aaron had spent the whole night preparing himself to finally share what he’d discovered. He knew telling Lance the truth would be like dropping a bomb, destroying any calm left between them.
But now, Lance didn’t even want to know?
Lance ended the call and walked out of the apartment complex, not looking back.
Once he got into his car, he paused, pulled out his phone again, and opened a message from Harrell.
[Lance, if you think about the timeline, Catherine got pregnant only half a year after your divorce. With how well you know her, do you really believe she’d move on that fast, meet someone new, and trust him enough to have his kid?]
Catherine had always been steady, the type to think things through.
Getting pregnant with someone else’s child just six months after the divorce… The thought stabbed at Lance’s heart, leaving a sour, restless ache he couldn’t shake. It was like his chest was stuck in a barrel of vinegar, the pain sharp and bitter.
He felt powerless, his mind caught in a storm of confusion and frustration. For someone usually so composed, it was almost enough to make him lose it.
...
Catherine didn’t see Lance at all that morning.
Letty showed up with some gossip, her eyes bright with curiosity. "You know, I heard Lance took Adelina out to Eldervale for a little trip."
"What’s he doing in Eldervale right before his wedding? Shouldn’t he be swamped with preparations?"
Catherine was half-reclined in her chair, eyes closed as she tried to rest. At Letty’s words, she cracked one eyelid open.
"The James and Green families have enough people to handle the wedding. He doesn’t need to do everything himself."
