“I just think you’re really impressive… You work so hard and always manage to succeed.”
Adela let go of her hand, still smiling as she tried to explain, but there was a hint of sadness in her eyes that she couldn’t hide.
Catherine forced a small, awkward smile. “Thank you for saying that, Adela.”
“I hope everything goes smoothly for you from now on,” Adela added gently.
Catherine nodded. “Thank you. I wish the same for you.”
The car pulled up outside the restaurant, and a security guard came over to open the door. As everyone got out, Catherine purposely tried to keep some space between herself and Lance. But standing next to Adela felt even more awkward, so without really thinking about it, she drifted a little closer to Lance’s side.
Lance had been striding ahead, but when he noticed, he slowed down until they were all walking together.
Inside the private dining room, a small square table was covered in a deep red tablecloth. Overhead, a glass lamp sent little rainbows swirling across the room. Adela and Lance took seats at opposite ends of the table.
Catherine came in just a little behind them, pausing as she looked at the setup.
“Could you bring another chair over here, please?” she asked a server.
“Of course.” The server quickly set an extra chair on the third side of the table.
Catherine sat down, not next to either of them, but somewhere in the middle.
Adela was a regular here and placed the order, choosing a few classic Eldervale dishes.
While they waited for the food, an awkward silence settled in. The age gap between them and Adela was obvious, and they weren’t close enough for easy conversation. They’d already covered all the safe topics in the car. Anything more personal just felt out of reach.
“So, Catherine… You’re transferring to Eldervale now? Does that mean you won’t be going back to Cabinda?” Adela always seemed to find a way to keep the conversation going, and the question sounded so casual.
Catherine shook her head. “I’ll be in Eldervale for now… I don’t know what the future holds.”
“Eldervale’s a great place.” Adela turned to Lance. “She’s very capable. I’m sure she’ll do a great job running the branch. You don’t have to worry about a thing.”
