The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 371

Catherine’s heart was pounding so hard she thought it might burst right out of her chest.

Lance’s eyes locked onto her, sharp and unblinking, like he could see straight through to everything she was hiding.

“If you’re going to lie, then keep lying. Just make sure I never find out,” he said.

He stood tall, undid his tie, and shrugged off his jacket, letting it hang over his arm as he turned and walked toward the street.

There was no way this baby could be his. At least, that’s what logic told him. But deep down, something told Lance the truth was far more complicated. He kept replaying everything in his mind, searching for the moment he might have missed.

There weren’t any taxis in this neighborhood. He hadn’t just left Catherine, pregnant and alone, out here like that. But she didn’t have the nerve to ask him back into her car, either.

She took another road home, glancing in the rearview mirror. Lance stood under the streetlights, head down, cigarette glowing in the dark. The night was cool, and the mist curled around him, making him look even more distant.

Catherine knew she needed a good reason. Something solid, something believable, to explain to Lance why she’d kept this a secret. Otherwise, she was never going to get out of this mess.

One wrong step had led to another. If she could go back, she thought, maybe she shouldn’t have quit. Maybe she should have stayed at the branch office, had the baby where everyone could see, not hiding, not volunteering the truth but not lying either. Maybe things wouldn’t have spiraled so far out of control.

Back at home, Lorinda showed up with some snacks and took one look at Catherine’s face.

Catherine was curled up on the sofa, barely able to lift her head as she told Lorinda everything that had happened.

Lorinda sat beside her, trying to soothe her. “Even machines mess up sometimes. We’re only human. You care about this baby so much, it’s natural to lose your cool and make mistakes. If anyone’s to blame, it’s me. I should never have pushed you to leave Cabinda.”

Catherine stared at nothing, her eyes unfocused, sinking deeper into the couch.

“It’s not really our fault, either,” Lorinda said gently. “It’s Lance. If he wanted custody, he’d win, no contest. We’d never stand a chance. We had to make sure he never got the opportunity.”

Lorinda tucked Catherine’s hair behind her ear, then hugged her arm. “Don’t worry. We’ll find a way. We just need a really convincing story to tell him.”

Catherine had spent the whole ride home trying to think of something, but she was still drawing a blank. She leaned her head on Lorinda’s lap, hoping that if she just breathed for a minute, an idea would come.
