The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 367

"I'm sorry, I'm really not feeling well tonight. I can't drink," Catherine said, her voice soft but honest.

The man across from her didn’t look convinced. His expression grew a little sour. "Catherine, are you sure you understand how things work here in the Eldervale business scene? I'm not trying to make this hard for you."

People nearby started glancing over, curiosity in their eyes, as if trying to figure out what Catherine meant by refusing the drink. She could feel the attention, the unspoken question hanging in the air. She couldn’t drink, but if she kept refusing...

"She’s not feeling well. I’ll drink for her," Lance said, suddenly appearing at her side. He had noticed what was happening and excused himself from his conversation, glass already in hand.

The man’s face changed the moment he saw Lance. "Lance, that’s not what I meant. I just wanted to have a drink. Even if Catherine took just a sip, that would be fine!"

"She really isn’t well these past couple of days. She shouldn’t be drinking at all. That’s why I came with her tonight," Lance replied, keeping it short.

The man seemed a little embarrassed, but he finally accepted the explanation. "I’ll drink three then. Lance, you do as you like."

He picked up his glass and knocked back three drinks in a row, barely stopping to breathe. Lance tilted his head and finished his own glass in one smooth motion.

Around them, people started whispering. Lance was her boss, and he’d just stepped in to shield her from the awkwardness. Catherine glanced at him. She caught the way his Adam’s apple moved as he swallowed, the whole gesture so natural, almost protective.

This was the first time he’d ever done something like this for her.

Catherine’s eyes fluttered, and as she looked away, she noticed Sally nearby, holding up her phone and sneaking a picture.

Lance set his glass down, turned his head just enough to glance at Sally. His eyes were cold, unreadable. He didn’t linger, turning back to Catherine.

"I’ll take care of things here. Go wait in the car," he said quietly.

Their eyes met. He didn’t seem to mind Sally’s little stunt, or that she’d probably send those photos to Adelina, maybe with some dramatic story attached. Catherine thought she saw a hint of something deliberate in his expression, as if he wanted Adelina to see.

Catherine didn’t say anything else. She turned and walked out, lifting her long skirt slightly, the fabric brushing over her ankles as she made her way to the door.
