“Sorry to bother you. I thought you might not be feeling well again.”
Catherine kept her voice down, twisting her wrist gently to try and slip free from his hold.
Lance let go right away and pushed himself up to sit.
“I’m fine.”
“Then why didn’t you eat?” Catherine pressed.
“Don’t worry. I took my meds.”
Catherine blinked, confused. The doctor had made it clear—never take the medicine on an empty stomach. Honestly, he might as well have skipped the dose altogether.
She wanted to say something more, but the second she met his dark, unreadable eyes, the words stuck in her throat. All that concern—she just swallowed it back.
“The Lees sent an invitation for their anniversary tomorrow night. Are you going?” she asked, changing the subject.
Lance’s reply was short and to the point. “It would be good for you to connect with the Lee family here. You’ll come with me.”
“Okay.” Catherine nodded. “By the way, Sophia just arrived in Eldervale. She’s been reassigned as PR manager for the branch.”
Ableson had arranged all of it behind the scenes. Lance didn’t even hear about the transfer until Sophia was already here.
“She’s still pretty new at this. Normally, she wouldn’t get that job, but right now, loyalty matters more than experience.”
“I’ll look after her,” Catherine replied without thinking.
Lance lifted his eyes to her, watching.
She hurried to explain. “I mean, even if it wasn’t her, I’d look after whoever it was.”
“Is that so.” His words were light, but there was something strange in his tone—almost like a question hidden underneath.
“Yes. I won’t bother you anymore. I should get back to work.”
Catherine turned to leave. Her clothes were a little loose, and somehow, that made her seem softer, like she’d lost a bit of her old edge.
