There was always something more behind a generous gesture, some hidden reason she couldn’t quite see.
Catherine managed a small, crooked smile. “Things in Eldervale are a mess right now. He only swallowed his pride and went to Adolf because he was worried I’d get hurt.”
But that wasn’t all of it. Deep down, Catherine knew Lance was trying to make it up to her. She just didn’t believe he owed her anything. Their marriage was over, finished, and it didn’t need fixing.
“Is that right?” Lewis had never pried into her business with Lance. He knew where the line was, and they weren’t close enough for those kinds of questions. Still, he couldn’t help himself this time. “Lance isn’t easy to fool. If he finds out what’s going on, have you thought about what comes next?”
Catherine hadn’t. Some things you just knew were going to end badly, even if you didn’t let yourself dwell on them. She promised Lewis she’d take care of it soon, but honestly, she had no idea how.
When she got home, the worry showed all over her pale face.
“What did Lance do now?” Lorinda took one look and knew immediately it was about him.
“It’s nothing.” Catherine forced a smile, trying not to let her mood spill over.
Lorinda had been looking after Jasper nonstop and had gotten noticeably thinner. She was restless and irritable, like a wild horse forced to stay inside. Catherine didn’t want to add her own problems to that pile.
Lorinda kept staring, so Catherine added, “Work’s just exhausting. I keep wondering when things will finally get better.”
“Come eat something first. You and that baby need to get your strength up. Three more months and you’ll be free!” Lorinda was trying to keep it together, too. She couldn’t wait to find someone else to help with the baby.
Jasper was wide awake after his nap. Catherine pulled his stroller closer, feeding herself while making faces at him. Lorinda slumped on the sofa, finally catching her breath.
“I called Amanda today,” Lorinda said, “asked about the money. She wouldn’t say where it went, no matter what.”
“We’re probably not getting it back,” Catherine said quietly.
