The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 325

Catherine had been in Eldervale for a week now, though it felt like a lifetime. Seven days apart and, somehow, it seemed like they were living in completely different worlds. The video call between them only made the distance feel sharper.

Lance shifted in his seat, the muscles in his jaw tightening. “I’m starting to regret sending you to Eldervale,” he admitted, his voice low and rough.

Catherine’s lips parted, but she couldn’t seem to find any words. His dark eyes locked onto hers through the screen, and for a second, she just stared back, silent.

After a moment, Lance looked away, grabbing the pack of cigarettes on the table. He lit one and let the smoke curl up around his face, hiding his expression.

“Things over there are way more complicated than I expected,” he finally said. “I’m worried you’re getting in over your head.”

His voice was soft but carried a heaviness that lingered between them.

Catherine cleared her throat, trying to keep her own voice steady. “I’ll be careful. Really. I’ll explain everything to the board when the time comes.”

Her position as branch manager meant she had to report anything unusual. It was part of the job.

“There’s no need. I’ll handle the board,” Lance replied, taking the cigarette from his lips. He played with a lighter in his other hand, looking almost casual, but the authority in his tone left no room for argument.

“I’ll send someone over to help you as soon as possible.”

They still hadn’t filled the vice manager spot at the branch. Having someone else there would make things a lot easier for her.

Catherine nodded. “Okay.”

The call went quiet. For a while, neither of them spoke, but little gestures and glances gave away what they were really feeling.

Eventually, Catherine broke the silence. “Lance, should we get back to the meeting?”

She didn’t think their conversation was private enough to clear the room.

Lance made a quiet sound of agreement and tapped the ash from his cigarette. “Just… take care of yourself.”
