The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 321

Catherine grew up in the orphanage, and the words she heard most often were about how boys were valued more than girls. There weren’t many healthy kids there, and out of the few that were, most were girls. Amanda used to say all the time that girls were just a burden, a waste of money. It was the kind of talk that seemed even more common in rich families. When there’s that much money on the line, apparently having a son is everything.

Those two people walked away, never even noticing Catherine standing there. She lingered a little longer, then decided she should head back. Being gone too long would look bad.

She had just turned the corner from the bathroom when she saw Adela coming out in a hurry. The tension on Adela’s face faded as soon as she saw her.

“Where did you go? I thought you’d left,” Adela said, sounding a little breathless.

“I just needed some fresh air. Sorry, I should’ve said something before I left.” Catherine felt a little guilty for slipping away without a word. Still, Adela seemed a bit too worried.

“It’s alright. The others went to play cards. Do you play?” Adela walked closer, her tone warmer now.

Catherine shook her head.

“Then come with me.” Adela reached for Catherine’s wrist and led her down a shady little path toward a two-story villa.

“There are professionals here, the best beauty treatments, all imported machines. Let’s try it together.” She tugged Catherine inside, and right away someone came over to show them into a private room.

“Thank you for arranging all this, Adela, but my skin is pretty sensitive. I’d rather not try anything new,” Catherine said once they were settled, finally getting a chance to speak up.

Adela looked at her in surprise. “You have sensitive skin, too?”

Too? Catherine caught the word but didn’t ask.

“It might just be because I’m new to Eldervale. My skin’s been acting up these past few days,” she said.

Adela made a soft sound, thinking for a moment. “Let me have someone bring you some tea. You can just relax here, alright?”

“Okay. Thank you.” Catherine nodded and went to sit on the sofa in the lounge area.
