The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 313

Lance held his chopsticks a little tighter, but his face stayed calm, like nothing had happened. He turned to look at Adelina.

For a moment, pure joy and excitement flashed in Adelina’s eyes. It was gone just as quickly. She remembered something, pressed her lips together, and forced herself to stay composed. When she met Lance’s gaze, there was something complicated in her look.

“If you want to go home, I’ll drive you,” Lance said quietly.

Adelina glanced at him, her voice soft. “And if I don’t want to go home?”

Across the table, Sophia rolled her eyes and mimicked Adelina’s words under her breath. Belinda gave her a pinch under the table. Sophia squeaked and nearly jumped out of her seat before scooting her chair closer to Fiona.

Fiona shot Belinda a look, then turned to Sophia. “If you want to stay, just say it. Why all the games?”

With Fiona backing her up, Sophia got bolder. No wonder she and Adelina never clicked. Even as a woman, she couldn’t stand Adelina’s way of always talking in circles. Seriously, mouths are for talking, not for riddles. If people wanted to be mysterious, they could just use hand gestures and skip the conversation altogether.

In the background, the clatter from the kitchen covered up Sophia’s muttering. Even Belinda, sitting right next to her, didn’t catch it. Fiona did, though. She almost laughed, but instead just gave Sophia a gentle tap on the head.

Sophia stuck her tongue out and looked at Lance.

“If you don’t want to go back, then stay,” Lance said, still eating like nothing was out of the ordinary. “You can stay in my room.”

Adelina’s heart just about jumped right out of her chest. The man sitting next to her smelled faintly of sandalwood, and the way his white shirt stretched over his chest… she had dreamed of being in his arms more times than she could count. Tonight, she’d actually be in his room.

Sophia’s playful grin disappeared.

Adelina couldn’t hide her smile anymore. She nodded. “It’s getting late. No need for you to drive me home. I’ll just stay.”

“Of course you should. I’ll have someone get the room ready right away,” Belinda said, pleased. If Adelina and Lance got even closer, their wedding really might be a double celebration. The James family could finally put all their recent troubles behind them and hold their heads high again.
