The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 300

"Ms. Evans, I'm Ivan, the acting branch manager."

Ivan spoke with a formal edge, holding himself a little too stiffly. He looked Catherine up and down, slightly surprised by how young she was.

"Ivan," Catherine answered with a polite nod, then turned to the group of executives waiting by the entrance. "Good morning, everyone. I'm Catherine Evans. Looking forward to working with you all."

"Good morning, Ms. Evans."

"Hello, Ms. Evans..."

Their greetings trickled in, weak and half-hearted.

It looked like they were giving her a warm welcome, showing respect to their new boss sent from headquarters. But Catherine knew it was all just for show. There was no real sincerity here.

She had expected as much. Carrying her briefcase, she stepped inside.

"We'll have a meeting in half an hour. I'd also like to see the HR manager first."

Ivan kept pace beside her. "The department meetings are at nine. Maybe you could hold yours a bit later? We're short-staffed right now, and the HR manager left early to lead a campus recruitment event."

He'd just shut down both her requests without hesitation.

Catherine checked her watch. It was only eight thirty.

She stopped and looked at Ivan.

"So, Ivan, what do you suggest I do while the departments have their meetings?"

"You could get familiar with the branch's operations," Ivan said.

"I already did that last night," Catherine replied, calm and direct. "You're Ingram's nephew. Originally, Ingram's son was supposed to take over, and you were going to be his VP. Since he isn't coming, your promotion is off the table. But don't take it personally. If you do well, I'll make sure you get promoted."

She didn't sugarcoat it, but she wasn't cruel either—just honest.
