Lance just stared at Catherine, silent and unreadable.
Catherine kept her eyes on her lap, doing her best to avoid his gaze. “It’s just my health acting up again. It’s not Lance’s fault. I don’t think I can keep up with work for a while. I’ll need to take leave until after the New Year.”
“Leave granted.” Sophia jumped in right away, sounding like she was making an official decree. “Lance, make sure you approve her time off as soon as you get back. And don’t even think about docking her pay.”
Catherine’s face stayed calm and friendly as she talked to Sophia, but Lance’s expression grew even darker. He spoke with that cool, measured tone of his. “Alright then. Get some rest, Catherine. I hope you’ll pull yourself together and come back after the holidays, good as new.”
What he really meant was, just forget about last night.
He was making such a big deal out of it. Probably because he didn’t want Adelina finding out.
Catherine tried to reassure him. “Don’t worry, Lance. I know how to handle this.”
The midday sunlight poured into the room, casting Lance’s shadow right over her.
She glanced up at him, but his face was hidden in the bright light. She could only make out the sharp outline of his features before she quickly looked away.
“You were saying ‘so’ something earlier,” Lance pressed, standing tall. The crisp, clean scent of his cologne drifted around her, making her suddenly aware of how close he was.
Catherine met his eyes, her voice quiet but clear. “So… the only reason I didn’t show up to work today is because I’m sick.”
He looked at her for a long moment, as if trying to decide if he believed her.
“You two are way too formal. Seriously, you sound like you’re at a company meeting,” Sophia cut in, rolling her eyes. “You’d never guess you used to be married.”
Lance shot Sophia a serious look and told her, “Take good care of Grandma. I’m giving you permission to start your vacation early.”
Sophia pouted, clearly not thrilled. “Mom and Dad are off vacationing overseas with Daniel and everyone else. You’re busy with work and hanging out with Adelina. So I’m the only one left to deal with everything?”
“When I’m finished with work, I’ll come help,” Lance promised.
He grabbed his jacket, slung it over his arm, and walked out with long, confident strides.
As soon as his figure disappeared through the doorway, Catherine felt her nerves finally settle.
Now it was just her and Sophia left in the room.
“Sophia, what’s going on with Grandma?” Catherine couldn’t hide the worry in her voice.
