The Best Revenge It Wasn't Even Your Child novel Chapter 28

Even though she’d taken the day off, Catherine knew if work needed her, Lance would be the first to call. Her phone was on silent, but only Lorinda and Lance could get through. If he called, it would ring.

Her breath caught. Was it really Lance who had come to the hospital?

She bit her lip, nerves twisting in her chest, her face draining of color. Surely the nurse hadn’t mentioned the pregnancy to Lance… right? But the nurse had treated Lance like family and ordered a full checkup. She must have said something. Catherine’s mind spun, hoping for a miracle but bracing for disaster.

Maybe Lorinda just needed to talk. That was possible, wasn’t it?

She pressed her lips together and hit the call button again.

“Excuse me, the person who paid for me, is their last name Charles?”

“You don’t know your own family’s last name?” The nurse sounded rushed, almost annoyed. “James.”

The call ended.

A cold shiver ran down Catherine’s spine. She yanked the IV from her hand. Blood welled up, bright and hot on her skin. The pain was sharp, but she barely noticed. She grabbed a tissue, pressed it hard to her hand, threw on her coat, and hurried out.

She’d barely made it into the hallway when a nurse called after her.

“Catherine, you haven’t finished your IV!”

“I have to go. I’m not staying,” she replied, her voice rushed as she turned away.

Her fever still burned, making her dizzy and unsteady. She nearly stumbled as she walked. The nurse followed, worry in her voice.

“You can’t just leave like this. What if something happens?”

“If it does, it’s on me.” Catherine stabbed at the elevator button. The tissue on her hand was soaked red.

“Nothing is more important than your health. If it’s urgent, have your family help. Don’t risk your life, or your baby’s,” the nurse pleaded.
